APPendixStrategiesStaff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> facilitated access for people witha disability by:■■■■■■■■■■■■providing support equipment <strong>and</strong> technology throughthe Student Support Technology <strong>and</strong> EquipmentProgram <strong>and</strong> the Digital <strong>Education</strong> Revolution alternatetechnology; establishing in one region a storage depot<strong>and</strong> comprehensive catalogue to administer an adaptiveequipment exchange programimplementing procedures agreed with the NorthcottSociety <strong>and</strong> Spastic Centre to assess <strong>and</strong> provide therapyservices <strong>and</strong> technology required to enable students withdisabilities to access the curriculumimplementing the Support Class Administration Systemto allocate support class placements to students withdisabilities <strong>and</strong> behaviour disordersdeveloping guidelines for Direction to Enrol underpart 5A <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Education</strong> Act by facilitating detailedconsultation between Legal Services <strong>and</strong>disability groupsallocating high priority to planning for all majorinfrastructure upgrades to provide physical accessfor students, staff <strong>and</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the public, withpre-planning up to two years in advance, sharing <strong>of</strong>databases <strong>and</strong> conducting joint meetings betweenregional support specialists <strong>and</strong> asset management unitsupdating the <strong>Department</strong>’s website on an ongoing basisto conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines1.0 (W3C) <strong>and</strong> to improve information for studentswith a disability, their parents, carers, teachers<strong>and</strong> supporters.Challenges <strong>and</strong> future directionsTo progress access for people witha disability, staff <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Department</strong> will:■■■■facilitate the installation <strong>of</strong> disability access s<strong>of</strong>tware onDER laptops <strong>and</strong> enable wireless access for users in SSPsdeliver online courses in Curriculum Access <strong>and</strong>Outcomes Planning <strong>and</strong> Inclusion for learners withspeech, language <strong>and</strong> other communication needs■■■■■■provide training in the use <strong>of</strong> the Support ClassAdministration System, analysis <strong>of</strong> data, preparation <strong>of</strong>online Access Requests; <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>and</strong> implementintegrated Placement Panel proceduresmaintain equity assistance for school-based apprentices<strong>and</strong> trainees with disabilities <strong>and</strong> financial subsidies fortheir employers <strong>and</strong> RTOs through 2010continue implementation <strong>of</strong> W3C Web ContentAccessibility Guidelines with ongoing review <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Department</strong>’s website(s).Section 3: ParticipationStudents, staff <strong>and</strong> customers with disabilities have thesame opportunities as other people to take advantage<strong>of</strong> the range <strong>of</strong> education, training <strong>and</strong> employmentopportunities provided by the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>and</strong> itsfunded organisation.AchievementsTo further the participation <strong>of</strong> people with a disability, staff<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>:■■■■■■■■■■supported over 16,000 students with moderate to severedisabilities in regular classes; <strong>and</strong> over 17,500 studentswith disabilities in over 2,000 support classes in regular<strong>and</strong> special schoolsincluded 5,672 students with disabilities in the School toWork Program; <strong>and</strong> 1,073 in TAFE delivered VET coursesfor the HSCenrolled 5,181 students with disabilities in the DETSchool Swimming Schemeengaged performers with disabilities in the SchoolsSpectacular, Youth Olympics Opening Ceremony, DeafSigning Choir, wheelchair dancing, <strong>and</strong> othercommunity performancesawarded to students with disabilities the <strong>NSW</strong> top markin HSC Indonesian <strong>and</strong> a Premier’s ANZAC MemorialScholarship for a study tour <strong>of</strong> European battlefields.APPENDICES 141
