APPendixManagement <strong>and</strong> leadership development opportunitiesfor womenA wide range <strong>of</strong> leadership development opportunities was<strong>of</strong>fered for women across the <strong>Department</strong>. Achievementsfor 2009 included:■■■■■■■■■■■■The participation <strong>of</strong> women exceeded the target <strong>of</strong>50% in a range <strong>of</strong> leadership development programs forschool staff, including the school executive leadershipdevelopment program, principal preparation program,principal induction conference <strong>and</strong> team leadershipprogram.The participation <strong>of</strong> women in a number <strong>of</strong> leadershipdevelopment programs in the North Coast Regionincluded: 29 women in the Executive LeadershipDevelopment Program; 32 women in the 7 Habits <strong>of</strong>Highly Effective Leaders Program; 22 women in theGreat Leaders, Great Teams <strong>and</strong> Great Results Program<strong>and</strong> 16 women including one Aboriginal staff member inthe Aspiring Leaders Program.Human Resources Directorate conducted 24 pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldevelopment activities for corporate staff, includingworkshops, seminars <strong>and</strong> training courses. In total 445corporate staff participated in the program, 290 <strong>of</strong>whom were women.18 senior staff members participated in the TAFE <strong>NSW</strong>Building Our Future Leadership Program, 12 <strong>of</strong> whomwere women. This program forms part <strong>of</strong> the TAFE <strong>NSW</strong>Workforce Development Guarantee.23 staff members <strong>of</strong> the Hunter Institute undertook theCertificate IV in Frontline Management course throughthe TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Workforce Development GuaranteeInitiative, 22 <strong>of</strong> whom were women.101 staff participated in the Northern SydneyInstitute’s Leaders <strong>and</strong> Managers Forum, 61 <strong>of</strong> whomwere women.The <strong>Department</strong> supports a number <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalnetworks, including:■■■■■■The Young Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals’ Network which supportscorporate employees under 35 years <strong>of</strong> age by providinga range <strong>of</strong> knowledge building, networking <strong>and</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essional development opportunities. The networkalso provides a support mechanism for the organisation’sfuture leaders to contribute to the strategic direction <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Department</strong>. Women make up 75% <strong>of</strong> The YoungPr<strong>of</strong>essionals’ Network.The Corporate Managers’ Network provides managers<strong>and</strong> team leaders with a forum to hear <strong>and</strong> interact withleading speakers on contemporary issues relevant totheir work. It also <strong>of</strong>fers the opportunity to meet withcolleagues on a regular basis <strong>and</strong> develop an internalnetwork <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional support. Women are wellrepresented in this network.The Women in <strong>Education</strong>al Leadership Network providesa forum for women in the public education <strong>and</strong> trainingsystem to develop leadership skills <strong>and</strong> pursue careerprogression. The network <strong>of</strong>fers collegial support,workshops, mentoring <strong>and</strong> conferences. In 2009, thenetwork conducted workshops <strong>and</strong> seminars arranged inpartnership with TAFE institutes <strong>and</strong> regional <strong>of</strong>fices.Aboriginal <strong>and</strong>/or Torres Strait Isl<strong>and</strong>er peopleThe Aboriginal Human Resource Development Plan2009-2011 was released in 2009. This plan builds on thesuccesses <strong>of</strong> the previous plan to continue to improve therecruitment, development <strong>and</strong> retention <strong>of</strong> Aboriginalstaff across the <strong>Department</strong>. This plan has a strong focusto develop Aboriginal staff leadership skills to move intomanagement <strong>and</strong> leadership positions.Implementation resources for the plan■■A community <strong>and</strong> staff brochure about the planalong with an Implementation Guide to help leaders,managers, staff <strong>and</strong> the Aboriginal community identifyactions to make the plan a success at the local level wasalso released in 2009.84 APPENDICES
