APPendixStrategiesStaff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> facilitated accountability inservices for people with a disability by:■■■■■■■■■■■■■■continuing discussions with <strong>NSW</strong> Health, Ageing,Disability <strong>and</strong> Home Care, <strong>and</strong> Aspect regardingMemor<strong>and</strong>ums <strong>of</strong> Underst<strong>and</strong>ing to ensure servicesare helping students with disabilities stay at school <strong>and</strong>provide families with support to meet needsdeveloping a position paper on the Review <strong>of</strong> TVETfor Students with Disability, <strong>and</strong> reviewing the TVETguidelines for 2009continuing to implement the recommendations <strong>of</strong> theAuditor-General’s Performance Audit, Educating primaryschool students with disabilitiesdeveloping regional strategies to provide online learningfor mainstream teachers to enhance their capacity tomeet the needs <strong>of</strong> all studentsconducting a conference on Complex Case Managementin Western <strong>NSW</strong>managing discrimination claims so that where realdeficiencies are identified there are appropriatesystemic remediespurchasing adaptive s<strong>of</strong>tware licenses to cover the whole<strong>of</strong> South Western Sydney Institute for easy access toZoomText, JAWS, <strong>and</strong> Dragon s<strong>of</strong>tware for all staff<strong>and</strong> students.Challenges <strong>and</strong> future directionsTo progress accountability for the provision <strong>of</strong> services forpeople with a disability, staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> will:■■■■■■continue implementing the accountability frameworkin relation to the School Learning SupportCoordinator Initiativeexplore <strong>and</strong> develop a more efficient post schooldestination tracking strategyencourage <strong>and</strong> plan for the use <strong>of</strong> data driven supportservices with measurable targets <strong>and</strong> specificprogress indicators.Section 5: Joint Planning InitiativesThe <strong>Department</strong> develops strategic alliances <strong>and</strong> a morecoordinated approach to the delivery <strong>of</strong> services for peoplewith a disability.AchievementsTo further joint planning initiatives with other agenciesaround the provision <strong>of</strong> services for people with adisability, staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong>:■■■■■■■■■■negotiated with <strong>NSW</strong> Health to provide transition toschool <strong>and</strong> regular school attendance for children withcomplex medical needs who have spent many yearsin hospitalimplemented a regional interagency Conductive HearingLoss Strategic Planattracted 735 students to four Come <strong>and</strong> Try track <strong>and</strong>field carnivals for students with disabilities; conductedin partnership with the Australian College <strong>of</strong>Physical <strong>Education</strong>developed the Employment Strategy for Students withDisability in partnership with Ageing, Disability <strong>and</strong> HomeCare to determine <strong>and</strong> follow-up employment outcomescollaborated with Northcott <strong>and</strong> The Spastic Centre tosupport students with complex physical disabilities inaccessing the school curriculum.StrategiesStaff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> engaged in joint planning tosupport students with a disability by:■■■■engaging in partnerships with a wide spectrum <strong>of</strong>government <strong>and</strong> non-government organisations coveringareas such as health, welfare, juvenile justice <strong>and</strong>corrections, community relations, Indigenous <strong>and</strong> ethnicaffairs, advocacy <strong>and</strong> support for people with specificdisabilities, supported employment, parents <strong>and</strong> carers,sport, arts, lifestyle, education <strong>and</strong> trainingparticipating in the Positive Partnerships: supportingschool aged students on the autism spectrum projectto undertake training in Helping Children with Autism,implemented by the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>,Employment <strong>and</strong> Workplace Relations (DEEWR) <strong>and</strong>APPENDICES 143
