DETInternational manages international business development<strong>and</strong> coordinates, monitors <strong>and</strong> reports on all <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Department</strong>’s international operations. This includesmarketing <strong>and</strong> recruitment <strong>of</strong> international students forTAFE <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> government schools, <strong>and</strong> overseeinginternational projects <strong>and</strong> delegations. TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> NationalBusiness provides a single point <strong>of</strong> contact for large clients<strong>of</strong> TAFE Institutes. Two new units joined this portfolio in2009: the TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Customer Information <strong>and</strong> ReferralService <strong>and</strong> the TAFE Corporate Br<strong>and</strong> Unit.In the 2008/09 financial year, DET International attracted$120 million, an increase <strong>of</strong> over 17% on the previous year.After operating costs were accounted for, the surplus wasreturned to TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Institutes <strong>and</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> governmentschools to cover the cost <strong>of</strong> their international programs <strong>and</strong>to increase products <strong>and</strong> services for the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>.During 2009, revenue generated by international studentprograms increased by 24%, with growth in enrolmentsin <strong>NSW</strong> government schools <strong>of</strong> 10.6% <strong>and</strong> in TAFE <strong>NSW</strong><strong>of</strong> over 20%. In addition, the Study Tours Unit arrangedvisits to schools for over 111 groups, comprising over3,800 visitors. DET International also hosted 23 high-levelinternational delegations from 13 countries.Under Mr Riordan’s leadership, prestigious internationalprojects have been won <strong>and</strong> others completed. Theseinclude a school leadership <strong>and</strong> skills assessment projectimplemented on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Abu Dhabi <strong>Education</strong>Council <strong>and</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> the Workforce TrainingMaster Plan for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo in China.An academic pr<strong>of</strong>ile was undertaken for the Vocational<strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> Training Institute (VETI) in Abu Dhabi tohelp position it to meet local needs more effectively.VETI enrolled over 1,200 students in the 2008/09academic year.As part <strong>of</strong> a risk management strategy, DET Internationalinitiated a series <strong>of</strong> independent site visits to review qualityassurance processes for TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-shore programs.In 2009, TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> National Business generated $5.35mworth <strong>of</strong> business for TAFE <strong>NSW</strong> Institutes with 32 newhigh pr<strong>of</strong>ile training projects, a significant increase on theprevious year.In 2009, Mr Riordan was a keynote speaker at threenational conferences. He is a member <strong>of</strong> the JointCommittee on International <strong>Education</strong>, chairs theInternational <strong>Education</strong> Officials’ Network <strong>and</strong> was amember <strong>of</strong> the joint Ministerial Taskforce on <strong>Education</strong><strong>and</strong> Tourism. Mr Riordan was appointed by the Ministerto chair the <strong>NSW</strong> Ministerial Taskforce on International<strong>Education</strong> which delivered its findings in October 2009.Jane SimmonsSES Level 5, $240,875Regional Director, Northern SydneyDuring 2009, Jane Simmons’ strategic priority was t<strong>of</strong>urther develop the culture <strong>of</strong> continuous improvementacross the Northern Sydney Region. Her strong leadershipenabled her, together with her senior management team,to deliver effective <strong>and</strong> innovative educational strategies tothe region’s students <strong>and</strong> teachers.Mrs Simmons’ approach was data driven, focussing onfurther strengthening the region’s high performanceboth in student outcomes <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning <strong>and</strong>assuring that the region had a governance model thatreflected not only State targets but also the priorities <strong>and</strong>needs <strong>of</strong> the community.APPENDICES 109
