APPendixKey initiatives during 2009 included:■■■■■■■■■■■■effective implementation <strong>of</strong> the 2009-2011 RegionalPlan, including achievement <strong>of</strong> targets for all students inliteracy <strong>and</strong> numeracy in NAPLAN resultsacknowledgement <strong>of</strong> outst<strong>and</strong>ing outcomes invocational education in schools at the <strong>NSW</strong> TrainingAwards, with South Western Sydney being awardedwinner <strong>of</strong> the <strong>NSW</strong> VET in Schools Excellence Award2009, <strong>and</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> VET in Schools Student <strong>of</strong> Year 2009as well as recognition as state finalist in the <strong>NSW</strong> LargeProvider <strong>of</strong> the Yearopening <strong>of</strong> Middleton Grange Public School <strong>and</strong> EldersliePublic School to serve the growing population ineach arealeadership <strong>of</strong> the introduction <strong>of</strong> National Partnershipprograms in Literacy <strong>and</strong> Numeracy, Low SES School<strong>Communities</strong> <strong>and</strong> Teacher Qualityregional leadership capacity building through relievingopportunities for a range <strong>of</strong> roles including principal <strong>and</strong>school education directorfunctional analysis <strong>of</strong> regional support structures toassist future directions in 2010-2011.Mr Urry provided strategic advice <strong>and</strong> support for theexpansion <strong>of</strong> cooperative programs with the University<strong>of</strong> Western Sydney. Deliverables in these programs areexp<strong>and</strong>ing with opportunities provided by NationalPartnerships <strong>and</strong> consolidation <strong>of</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> the SchoolsEngagement Reference Group to foster school-universitypartnerships across the broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> community,work <strong>and</strong> educational activities. This initiative exp<strong>and</strong>edto promote a more formal alliance directed towardsinnovation <strong>and</strong> research.Positive relationships developed between the regionalleadership team <strong>and</strong> principals were again clearly evidentin comments <strong>and</strong> rankings from the 2009 Office <strong>of</strong>Schools Principals Survey, reflecting the approach <strong>of</strong>involving principals in the decision making processes <strong>of</strong>the region.112 APPENDICES
