Themain campus of the NMMU, where much of the region’s basic and appliedresearch is <strong>co</strong>ncentrated, is situated on an 830 ha nature reserve, locatedwithin sight of the Indian Ocean, and is in walking distance to lovely, wild, andaccessible beaches. Humewood Beach was recently accepted as a WorldClass Beach and ac<strong>co</strong>rded “Blue Flag” status, along with other Nelson MandelaBay beaches including Hobie, King’s, and Wells Estate.The Seaview Game and Lion Park, Kragga Kama Game Park, and thepopular Addo Elephant National Park are less than 80km from the centre of PortEli<strong>za</strong>beth. The indigenous fauna and flora plant species <strong>co</strong>ncentrated along the<strong>co</strong>astline are also accessible for viewing. Swimming, fishing, surfing, diving,snorkeling and sailing areas along the beaches at Algoa Bay are well secured.The crime rate in Port Eli<strong>za</strong>beth is perceived to be lower than that of other largeSouth African cities like Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria. Finally, PortEli<strong>za</strong>beth is also perceived as having less traffic <strong>co</strong>ngestion and shorter<strong>co</strong>mmute times than the larger cities.Growing Industrial Base and Available Industrial Land. There are at least800 middle-to-large <strong>co</strong>rporate entities within the NMB area. The region servesas a major hub for the automotive industry, with major OEMs including GeneralMotors, Volkswagen, Continental Tyres, and Ford. Coega has 6,500 hectares ofindustrial-zoned and serviced land. The industrial base is expected to grow, withmore firms locating over time at CIDZ. The establishment of large <strong>co</strong>rporatessuch as PetroSA, at the CIDZ is likely to result in downstream spinoffs forindustrial areas in the NMB area.The Coega Industrial Zone (CIDZ) and the Port of Ngqura (PON). Themassive CIDZ and PON development initiatives will directly change theindustrial landscape of the Nelson Mandela Bay area (NMB). The Port ofNgqura will offer deep-water access and will ac<strong>co</strong>mmodate larger vessels thatcannot dock at the current port. Ten <strong>co</strong>mpanies are now operational at CIDZand several medium-to-large firms are in various stages on their projectapprovals. NMB-based <strong>co</strong>mpanies that generate imports and exports enjoy afinancial leverage that is increasingly important now as <strong>co</strong>sts of running or hiringa fleet are on the increase.Accessibility. NMB offers global access through its existing and future portfacilities as well as its airport, with non-stop flights to the <strong>co</strong>untry’s majorinternational hubs. NMB also has a good transport infrastructure system to carryinter-provincial and intra-municipal traffic. The N2 highway <strong>co</strong>nnects NMB withCape Town and Durban. Coega has an excellent (albeit still under-utilised)internal transport system including multi-lane highways to ac<strong>co</strong>mmodate widebodytrucking. Uitenhage and Despatch, the two other towns in NMB with asubstantial industrial and residential base, are well <strong>co</strong>nnected to Port Eli<strong>za</strong>bethby the R75 highway. In line with the PGDP, the Province is focusing on<strong>co</strong>nsolidating, developing, and diversifying its manufacturing base by 2014.The following manufacturing clusters are targeted towards generating jobopportunities and assisting in alleviating poverty in the region:Agriculture.
