Renewable energy sources should beexplored to help the region meet future needs. This requirement can helpgenerate new opportunities for use of research and technology developmentinitiatives that are generated by local institutions.Programme Expansion and Diversification. The strategy to lure investorsfrom sectors such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals will require collaborationwith local institutions of higher learning (suppliers of skilled manpower,research, and testing). NMMU and other area institutions currently do not offerchemical engineering and food science programmes, although a chemicalprocess operators diploma, aimed at providing skills for the new PetroSArefinery at Coega, is being developed. Interventions are needed to addresssuch gaps in the near term.There is need for collaborations between the regional institutions of higherlearning, the investors and government organizations involved in the skills valuechain such as the Department of Labour (DOL) and Department of Home Affairs(DOHA). Industrial growth must be balanced with the skills supply in criticalareas, and there may be a need to recruit skilled workers to help the targetedindustries grow. African Development Economic ConsultantsADECSection 2.RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT BASESection 2 provides an overview of the science research and developmentbase in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas of the Eastern Cape.ADEC has inventoried the various entities engaged in innovation in the region,including those involved in basic science research, product development (R&D),technology transfer, business incubation, entrepreneurial support, andcorporate research. Extensive interviews were held with the researchers fromthe institutions of higher learning, NGOs, state-funded organizations (involved ineconomic growth initiatives, business incubation, and research and productdevelopment), and local corporate entities. This inventory is detailed inAppendix B and C, and highlights are summarized below.Institutions of Higher EducationThe institutional component of the R&D inventory focuses on researchhoused at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Rhodes University(RU), Walter Sisulu University (WSU), and University of Fort Hare (UFH).Information has been provided on past and ongoing scientific research andproduct development activities undertaken by under/postgraduate students,individual lecturers, departmental research and technology centers, and R&Dstations. The research undertaken by NMMU is the primary focus of this study,because of NMMU’s location within Nelson Mandela Bay.Nelson Mandela Metropolitan UniversityNelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the result of a mergerbetween the Port Elizabeth Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth, and thePort Elizabeth Campus of the Vista University in 2005. The institution is one ofonly four comprehensive universities in South Africa that are benefiting fromcombining technikon-type programmes (more “hands-on” and industry-focused)and university educational programmes.The total student enrollment is approximately 23,000 with a permanentstaff complement of approximately 1,500. The Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity is privileged to be named after one of the world’s most respectedliving statesman. It is a name that carries significant legacy and expectationsand is one of the few names that people worldwide universally recognize in apositive light.The NMMU is largely an undergraduate university, with 12% of studentsundertaking postgraduate studies, of which only 1% are doctoral students.Faculty of Science. The Faculty of Science consists of three schools: theSchool of Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, the School of ComputerScience, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics and the School of EnvironmentalSciences.
