African Development E<strong>co</strong>nomic ConsultantsADECSection 2.RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT BASESection 2 provides an overview of the science research and developmentbase in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas of the Eastern Cape.ADEC has inventoried the various entities engaged in innovation in the region,including those involved in basic science research, product development (R&D),technology transfer, business incubation, entre<strong>pre</strong>neurial support, and<strong>co</strong>rporate research. Extensive interviews were held with the researchers fromthe institutions of higher learning, NGOs, state-funded organi<strong>za</strong>tions (involved ine<strong>co</strong>nomic growth initiatives, business incubation, and research and productdevelopment), and local <strong>co</strong>rporate entities. This inventory is detailed inAppendix B and C, and highlights are summarized below.Institutions of Higher EducationThe institutional <strong>co</strong>mponent of the R&D inventory focuses on researchhoused at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Rhodes University(RU), Walter Sisulu University (WSU), and University of Fort Hare (UFH).Information has been provided on past and ongoing scientific research andproduct development activities undertaken by under/postgraduate students,individual lecturers, departmental research and technology centers, and R&Dstations. The research undertaken by NMMU is the primary focus of this study,because of NMMU’s location within Nelson Mandela Bay.Nelson Mandela Metropolitan UniversityNelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the result of a mergerbetween the Port Eli<strong>za</strong>beth Technikon, the University of Port Eli<strong>za</strong>beth, and thePort Eli<strong>za</strong>beth Campus of the Vista University in 2005. The institution is one ofonly four <strong>co</strong>m<strong>pre</strong>hensive universities in South Africa that are benefiting from<strong>co</strong>mbining technikon-type programmes (more “hands-on” and industry-focused)and university educational programmes.The total student enrollment is approximately 23,000 with a permanentstaff <strong>co</strong>mplement of approximately 1,500. The Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity is privileged to be named after one of the world’s most respectedliving statesman. It is a name that carries significant legacy and expectationsand is one of the few names that people worldwide universally re<strong>co</strong>gnize in apositive light.The NMMU is largely an undergraduate university, with 12% of studentsundertaking postgraduate studies, of which only 1% are doctoral students.Faculty of Science. The Faculty of Science <strong>co</strong>nsists of three schools: theSchool of Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, the School of ComputerScience, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics and the School of EnvironmentalSciences. The Faculty has a total enrollment of around 1,300 students and 23%(300 students) of the total are engaged in postgraduate studies, which is103 Algernon Road, Norwood (Johannesburg).
