Complementing its <strong>co</strong>mpetitive strength inchemical processing, InnoVenton has plans to establish a Fuel ChemicalsCentre at NMMU. The centre will carry out basic and applied research workfocused on fuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol, diesel, and petrol. The centrewill also have testing facilities.The FCC requires R21 million for establishment. Approximately 35% hasbeen secured from the NMMU, Sasol Fuels Research and Tshumisano Trust.Major players in the SA’s petrochemicals industry (the targeted beneficiaries ofthe FCC project), plus the Department of Science and Technology (DST), andthe NMMU Trust have been identified as potential funders for the project.School of Computer Science, Physics and Textile Science. TheSchool has ongoing <strong>co</strong>llaborations and linkages with the public and privatesector. Some of these <strong>co</strong>llaborations are described below.Computer Science. The School of ICT (SICT) and the Department ofComputer Science (DOCS) are engaged in the NMMU Telkom Centre ofExcellence (CoE), described in the <strong>pre</strong>vious section. In the CoE, theDepartment of Computer Science and the School of ICT are also <strong>co</strong>llaboratingwith private players such as Dimension Data and IBM,. Plans are underway atSICT to establish an ICT Industry Advisory Board.There is room for <strong>co</strong>llaborative engagements between the SICT/DOCSand local industry through the SEDA ICT Incubator and the Coega IndustrialDevelopment Zone (CIDZ). CIDZ is currently luring investors from the ICTindustry and as such it will be vital for institutions like SICT and DOCS to backup such investment initiatives with the supply of skilled manpower and on-thejobtraining, among other interventions.103 Algernon Road, Norwood (Johannesburg).
