Tourism is being targeted based on the region’s rich base ofcultural and heritage sites, beautiful beaches and coastal areas, game reserves,the Drakensberg, and national parks. Province is targeting the use of culturalheritage sites as potential tourist destinations.Marine and Aquaculture. The Province is exploring opportunities inaquaculture along its 800km long coastline. The CIDZ and the ELIDZ facilitieshave also been extended to investors from the fisheries industries.Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan MunicipalityThe following industries were identified by Nelson Mandela BayMunicipality as key targets for industrial attraction, recruitment, and expansion.This list was identified based on the Local Economic Development Plan for theMunicipality.Manufacturing. The municipality’s focus is to consolidate, develop, anddiversify its manufacturing base by supporting the manufacturers of automotivecomponents that supply the region’s large OEMs. Firms in the metals,chemicals, and agro-processing industries are key targets specifically for theCIDZ area. CIDZ projects could become the key focus for future industrialdevelopment in the NMB area.Tourism. NMB has targeted tourism as an important driver for economicgrowth. Port Elizabeth will be a host city for 2010 FIFA World Cup matches.Tourist destinations in the surrounding area, such as the Addo ElephantNational Park, and projects linked to the 2010 FIFA World Cup are expected togenerate employment opportunities for the local population.Services. Creation of job opportunities within the services industry isanticipated, with NMB serving as a major services hub for the province.Opportunities in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information,Communication and Technology (ICT) are expected to generate the bulk of thejobs in this sector.Creative Industries. NMB has targeted the development of the creativeindustries, especially the film industry, as a way to generate jobs for localresidents. In particular, the municipality is targeting opportunities foremployment and entrepreneurship in this sector to previously-disadvantagedindividuals.Economic Development StrategiesThe economic development strategies for the municipality and theprovince, as detailed in the Local Economic Development (LED) Plan and theProvincial Growth Development Strategy (PGDS), respectively, are summarizedbelow. Use infrastructureand government- sponsored incentives at CIDZ andELIDZ to lure targeted large-scale manufacturers toestablish manufacturing plants at the zones.Use spatial developmental initiatives and agency firms tosupport emerging industrialists at municipal level.The Land Affairs office will be engaged to resolve landclaims in the province. There is a request for moreextension officers from the Department of Agriculture(DOA). Identify value-add initiatives and engage theDOA in such projects.The DOA will assist in the resuscitation of the irrigationsystems and dairy schemes in the province.The LRAD financing scheme will assist the existing andpotential beneficiaries of the land reform programme withfunding for development purposes as individuals, cooperatives,and private equity firms.Upgrade and maintain all infrastructures linked to touristdestinations and prioritize all projects linked to the FIFA2010 World Cup.Ensure public safety and security at key beachfronts.Provide capacity building and support initiatives forexisting and emerging Small to Medium Enterprises(SMMEs) in the tourism business. Develop Art Centresat municipal levels.Market crafts and tourism-focused products. Establishpartnerships with mentor tourism companies. Providelearnerships and internships.Explore opportunities in aquaculture along the 800kmlong coastline.Use the CIDZ and the ELIDZ to lure aquaculture projectsinto the region.Engage communities in growing and protecting trees.Increase the number of forestry plantations in the regionand support the furniture manufacturing sector.
