Forexample, General Motors has provided R3.0 million in funding for the five-yearGMSA Chair in Mechatronics. Volkswagen has provided financial sponsorshipfor the VWSA-DAAD International Chair in Automotive Engineering). Sasol gaveR6.0 million towards the HRTEM and funded other research projects at theNMMU. Some forms of intervention by Sasol and other large <strong>co</strong>rporates alsobenefit local firms directly and indirectly through <strong>co</strong>llaborations around researchand technology development issues.The Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Company (PBMRC), a public-privateinitiative oriented to development of alternative energy sources, has sponsoredR16 million of research in fuel characterisation at the NMMU since 2006 and willprovide R5.0 million towards the establishment of the HRTEM Centre. Privateindustry’s participation (with financial and technical expertise) is vital in rollingout <strong>co</strong>stly and risky research projects such as the HRTEM Centre. The HRTEMproject claims significant potentials for generating large impacts in employmentand industrial spin-off.Research funding from the private sector ac<strong>co</strong>unted for at least 2.3% oftotal NMMU funding from external sources and 1.5% of the overall research103 Algernon Road, Norwood (Johannesburg).
