Total THRIP funding received since 2006 totalsR52.9 million, with the amount in the research pipeline growing at an averagerate of 3.4% per annum. Over one-half (50.6%) of the total THRIP funding toNMMU disbursed since 2006 has been targeted to projects generated by Prof.J. Neethling (an NRF-rated researcher in Physics).A significant portion of the THRIP funding to Dr. Neethling is targeted tothe PBMR project, which will form part of the Centre for HRTEM whenestablished. Prof. Neethling‘s share of THRIP funds increased from 45.4% in2006 to 67.2% by November 2009, reflecting the NRF‘s commitment to theHRTEM project. Other key NMMU researchers and consistent recipients of theTHRIP funds include Prof. B. Zeelie (chemical sciences, 11.5%), Prof. D.Hattingh (automotive engineering, 9.0%), Prof. J. Forexample, General Motors has provided R3.0 million in funding for the five-yearGMSA Chair in Mechatronics. Volkswagen has provided financial sponsorshipfor the VWSA-DAAD International Chair in Automotive Engineering). Sasol gaveR6.0 million towards the HRTEM and funded other research projects at theNMMU. Some forms of intervention by Sasol and other large corporates alsobenefit local firms directly and indirectly through collaborations around researchand technology development issues.The Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Company (PBMRC), a public-privateinitiative oriented to development of alternative energy sources, has sponsoredR16 million of research in fuel characterisation at the NMMU since 2006 and willprovide R5.0 million towards the establishment of the HRTEM Centre. Privateindustry’s participation (with financial and technical expertise) is vital in rollingout costly and risky research projects such as the HRTEM Centre. The HRTEMproject claims significant potentials for generating large impacts in employmentand industrial spin-off.Research funding from the private sector accounted for at least 2.3% oftotal NMMU funding from external sources and 1.5% of the overall research103 Algernon Road, Norwood (Johannesburg).
