Segment 3 –<strong>San</strong> Simeon Point to Cambria<br />

Segment 3 stretches from 3 miles north of <strong>San</strong> Simeon<br />

Bay southward approximately 9 miles to the northern<br />

urban reserve line (URL) of Cambria. Offshore waters<br />

along this segment are part of the Monterey Bay<br />

National Marine Estuary. The segment passes <strong>San</strong><br />

Simeon Point and Bay, Hearst <strong>San</strong> Simeon State<br />

Historical Monument (Hearst Castle), the community<br />

of <strong>San</strong> Simeon, Hearst <strong>San</strong> Simeon State Park, Exotic<br />

Gardens, and limited agricultural and rural residential<br />

uses north of Cambria. The Hearst Castle Visitor Center<br />

is located approximately 0.25 mile east of Highway 1<br />

adjacent to <strong>San</strong> Simeon Point.<br />

Introduction and Summary<br />

Hearst <strong>San</strong> Simeon State Park is one of the oldest units<br />

in the California State Park System. The park includes the <strong>San</strong>ta Rosa Creek Natural Preserve, the <strong>San</strong> Simeon<br />

Natural Preserve, and the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve, and is adjacent to the Hearst <strong>San</strong> Simeon Historical<br />

Monument, which includes the “castle” and the visitor’s center. The park offers approximately 3.5 miles of<br />

trails, camping, a boardwalk, seasonal wetland area, interpretive panels, a <strong>Coastal</strong> Discovery Center, Rangerled<br />

junior park programs, guided hikes, and many scenic viewpoints. Exotic Gardens is a local tourist<br />

attraction noted for its nursery and gardens specializing in succulent plants. The three-acre site is located on<br />

the east side of Highway 1 near the north entrance of Moonstone Beach Drive.<br />

Several formal and informal beach access points exist along this segment, including parking and trails just<br />

north of the mouth of Oak Knoll Creek, trails just south of <strong>San</strong> Simeon, and multiple scenic viewpoints and<br />

parking areas along the coastal bluffs. Segment 3 includes unrestricted views of the beach and Pacific Ocean.<br />

This segment includes the community of <strong>San</strong> Simeon, a tourist-oriented community that includes some<br />

residential uses. Predominant land uses in Segment 3 include recreation, agriculture, and visitor-serving<br />

commercial uses in the community of <strong>San</strong> Simeon.<br />

Segment 4 –Cambria<br />

Segment 4 predominantly runs through the urbanized<br />

community of Cambria, with views of surrounding<br />

residential, open space, and commercial uses. Adjacent<br />

areas east of Cambria are generally used for open space<br />

and/or grazing. The segment includes the northwestern<br />

portions of Cambria where the beachfront commercial<br />

and recreational uses include hotels, motels, restaurants<br />

and beachfront residences on the east of Moonstone<br />

Drive. Leffingwell and Moonstone State Beach Parks are<br />

situated west of Moonstone Drive. From Leffingwell<br />

Creek pocket beaches and a bluff top boardwalk extend<br />

south for close to one mile towards the mouth of <strong>San</strong>ta<br />

Rosa Creek.<br />
