4.3 Gravemarkers:A military style gravemarker (upright or flat granite, or in certain cases, flat bronze)conforming with the standards of Veterans Affairs Canada may be provided underconditions similar to those that govern funeral and burial assistance. This does notinclude assistance toward the cost of a privately Native Women's Association of Canada-Federal Government Programs 245 purchased headstone or the cost of inscribingmilitary service particulars on a previously erected private gravemarker.4.4 Application for Assistance:An application for funeral and burial assistance must be made to the nearest DistrictOffice of Veterans Affairs Canada within one year following the death of the veteran.Applications that are received after the one-year limit will not be considered. Addressesand telephone numbers are listed in the blue pages of your telephone book under theheading "Government of Canada".4.5 Funeral, Burial and Gravemarking Assistance - Last Post Fund (LPF):The LPF is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to ensure, insofar as possible,that no war veterans or civilians who meet the wartime service eligibility criteria aredenied a dignified funeral and burial for lack of sufficient funds. The LPF operates incooperation with, and is supported financially by Veterans Affairs Canada.4.6 Service Eligibility:To meet the wartime eligibility criteria the deceased must have served on active dutyduring: The First World War - August 4, 1914 to August 14, 1921; The Second World War - September 1, 1939 to September 30, 1947; Military operations undertaken by the United Nations to restore peace in theRepublic of Korea at any time prior to October 31, 1953.4.7 Financial Eligibility:Financial eligibility is based on an assessment, at the time of death, of the financialresources of the veteran and any surviving spouse. This assessment is guided byestablished criteria and varies depending on whether or not the veteran was survived bya spouse and/or dependent children.4.8 Application:At the death of a person for whom LPF benefits may be a consideration, the next-of-kinor other responsible person should contact the nearest LPF office as soon as possibleto establish eligibility.
