Central Coburg 2020 Background Report [ Phase 2A: Setting the Objectives ]
Opportunities Concerns/Issues
? Coburg provides a ‘break’ in travel
journeys (public transport).
? Sub-committees within Coburg (eg
churches).
? Internet cafes attract young people
(opportunities at library).
Moving Around the Area
Coburg to use this. Resources
available for events. A cultural
centre.
? Any opportunities for
entertainment? Centre is dead out
of hours – more mixed use and
more sustained life.
Within this stage transport infrastructure of all forms was discussed.
This stage involved the discussion on the way people were going to move around the
central Coburg in a variety of forms and modes. Identification of the issues and
concerns the Plan needed to overcome if it was to succeed were outlined.
Opportunities Concerns/Issues
? Pedestrian connections in and out
of Pentridge.
? Bike use of street network.
? Understand potential of Merri
Creek path.
? Buses – use the bus system more
effectively.
? Opportunity for “dumbbell” effect –
strong links between
retail/recreational links.
? Opportunities for railway station:
increased walkways and streets
surrounding stations.
? Imp nearby shopping areas to link
in.
? Better relationship between
buses/stations.
? Truck access to retail core.
? Additional streets of streets better
needed.
? To test the space syntax model.
? ‘Car based’ destinations. Cafes
(regional magnets) in Pentridge
while ‘café’ culture in Sydney Road
can strengthen main street.
? Provide an important safety barrier
to sidewalk.
? Moving tram stops and landscape,
push arts into the street.
? Easy to get across Sydney Road -
slow traffic movement.
? Around the City Oval area – safety
issues, hidden, lonely.
? Increase use of bicycles. Flat area,
centre needs bicycle facilities -
? Increasing traffic lessens diversity
of street use.
? (Merri Creek path) Poor signage,
surfaces in places, also along
eastern side of railway line.
? Buses don’t go where people want
to go.
? Lack of street network,
connections.
? Street additions need to make the
alternatives work.
? Noise and physical access of
trucks to shops.
? Streets only designed to carry
traffic – needs to change; diverse
use (pedestrian, etc).
? Streets: missing links.
? Isolation of new development in
Coburg - new residents will drive
most places. -May not be to
Coburg core retail.
? Competitive of Pentridge again.
? Physical safety - poor quality public
environment.
? Car spaces on Sydney Road.
? Lack of permeability for
pedestrians.
? Pedestrian distances and
convenience required to get
around.
? Pedestrian traffic signals are
inadequate.
? Access from Pentridge to central
Coburg. Very poor currently.
