Methodological Framework: Different SurveysDistrict Inform<strong>at</strong>ion System for Educ<strong>at</strong>ion (<strong>DISE</strong>)<strong>DISE</strong> is developed to collect inform<strong>at</strong>ion from all recognized institutionsimparting elementary educ<strong>at</strong>ion across the country. Recognized institutionsinclude both government as well as priv<strong>at</strong>e managed schools. Priv<strong>at</strong>emanaged schools include both priv<strong>at</strong>e aided and priv<strong>at</strong>e un-aided schools,and government managed schools include schools run by the Departmentof Educ<strong>at</strong>ion, Local Body, Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare Departments.Unlike other surveys, <strong>DISE</strong> is complete enumer<strong>at</strong>ion of schools. The unitof d<strong>at</strong>a collection is school and district, unit of d<strong>at</strong>a dissemin<strong>at</strong>ion. School-Head Master/Head-Teacher is the respondent who is imparted training infilling-up of the form<strong>at</strong>s by BRC and CRC Coordin<strong>at</strong>ors. The filled-in form<strong>at</strong>sare thoroughly checked <strong>at</strong> the cluster level by the Coordin<strong>at</strong>or, ClusterResource Centre. D<strong>at</strong>a feeding takes place <strong>at</strong> the district level and theconcerned BRC Coordin<strong>at</strong>or is also supposed to be available <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> time.All the districts have MIS Unit, which is loc<strong>at</strong>ed in the office of the DistrictProject Coordin<strong>at</strong>or.At the time SSA was launched in 2001, the coverage of <strong>DISE</strong> was extendedto the entire country. The frequency of d<strong>at</strong>a collection under the <strong>DISE</strong> isannual and d<strong>at</strong>e of reference is 30 th September each year. About 581districts across 29 St<strong>at</strong>es and UTs of the country representing 99.5 percentof the total popul<strong>at</strong>ion were covered under the <strong>DISE</strong> till 2004-05. Thecoverage was further extended to all the remaining districts and st<strong>at</strong>esduring 2005-06. The published d<strong>at</strong>a as on September 30, 2004 (2004-05)are available <strong>at</strong> the School (www.schoolreportcards.in), District, St<strong>at</strong>eand N<strong>at</strong>ional levels (www.dpepmis.org) and is based on inform<strong>at</strong>ionreceived from as many as 1.04 million institutions imparting elementaryeduc<strong>at</strong>ion across the country. D<strong>at</strong>a for the year 2005-06 are likely to bedissemin<strong>at</strong>ed shortly which are based on the inform<strong>at</strong>ion received frommore than 1.12 million institutions imparting elementary educ<strong>at</strong>ion acrossthe country.
