OP 14 - AURAL COMPREHENSION - Phone call from Silvia
- Listen to this…
This ties in with a conversation on PCB 14.
A tour de force for the uninhibited teacher: doing one side of a telephone conversation (more realistic
than hearing both speakers). This can only work if you really get into the "part"…
You should rehearse this well before doing it for the first time. Try to make it sound like a normal
telephone conversation, with occasional "uhms" and "ers", laughs, etc. (And feel free to re-script what
doesn't work for you…)
(146 words; about 60")
(DIY sound effects: brrring! brrring!!)
(picking up the "phone") Hello? …… Oh, hi, Silvia! …… Oh, really? That sounds nice! ……
How many people? …… Forty, eh? - One for every year? …… Excuse me, Silvia, I know you're
only "thiry-something"! …… So, when's the party? …… No! This Saturday? …… Well, I'm busy
on Saturday. …… I'm going to the theatre, with some friends. …… No, you don't know them.
…… Jim and Debbie Wilson. …… They're very nice. …… No, they're American. …… I met
them in Greece last year - I think I told you. …… That's right. …… Uh-huh. …… "Macbeth."
…… The Royal Shakespeare Company. …… Yes, it should be good. …… Now, that's a good idea!
…… It should be over by eleven. …… Yes, I'd love to! …… OK, after the theatre, then. ……
Bye! And say hello to John! (hanging up the telephone, to yourself:) Oh God! Now I have to get her a
present!
- Now, did you understand some of that conversation…?
Did Silvia invite me to dinner, or to a party?
What's the OCCASION?
How old is she, APPROXIMATELY?
When is the party?
But, as I told Silvia, I'm busy on Saturday. What am I doing?
What play am I going to see?
What company is PERFORMING?
By the way, who wrote "Macbeth"?
Who am I going to the theatre with?
Are they English?
Where did I meet them?
So, I'm going to the theatre. What about Silvia's party?
One last question: who do you think John is?
