OP 14 - SERIAL - Joanne's Story, episode fourteen
- Let's talk about the serial, "Joanne's Story", episode fourteen…
The students should know the story pretty well, so don't slow down unless it's really necessary.
In addition to being a comprehension exercise, this helps the student to follow the story and provides
clues for future developments.
Most of the unfamiliar vocabulary in this exercise (in SMALL CAPS) is passive in the serial itself.
Joanne is STILL at Felipe Barca's villa. It's almost ten o'clock. She tells Felipe she has to go…but the
telephone RINGS…
Who is it - do you remember - Pedro or Ernesto?
What INFORMATION does Ernesto have for his boss?
117
It's Ernesto.
Marta is at the airport ("with the British
consul and the Italian writer")
(this should be read rather deliberately) Felipe wants to go to the airport, to LOOK FOR Marta. He tells
Ernesto… to tell Pedro… to come to the villa… immediately!
Joanne is NERVOUS. Does she want to meet Pedro?
She says she has to go back to the hotel, to call her
EDITOR in London. What does Felipe say she can do?
Joanne has a BRILLIANT idea. Who does she REALLY call?
Is Paolo at the airport, or is he in his car?
No, she doesn't!
She can use his (cordless) phone.
("You can call him…now!")
Paolo.
He's in his car. (racing to the villa)
(deliberately) Now, Joanne PRETENDS to speak to her editor, Brian, in London, but she's REALLY
speaking to Paolo, on his mobile, in his car. He asks her a lot of questions, and she INFORMS him about
the situation, the DESPERATE situation…
Does Paolo tell Joanne to stop talking, or to
KEEP TALKING?
Paolo also REVEALS his FEELINGS for Joanne.
Does he say: "Joanne, I think… I like you"?
How does Joanne feel about Paolo?
Possible segue:
("Keep talking, Joanne! Keep talking!")
No, he says: "Joanne, I think… I love you!"
The same. (she says, as if to her editor:
"Yes, me too.")
