The Lakes and Coorong section of the River Murraysystem consists of the terminal lakes Alexandrina andAlbert which, together with the Coorong, once formeda huge estuarine system. Barrages now separate thelakes from the Coorong and retain fresh water in theLakes.SummaryThe hydrology of the River Murray is characterised by:• its low and relatively flat gradient and slope;• the extremes in wet and dry cycles across seasons andacross years and its relatively low water flow volumescompared with other major rivers;• the importance of both longitudinal and lateralconnectivity via water flows for energy and nutrienttransfer across the entire system;• the meandering planform and associated wetlands, billabongs, anabranches, lakes and marshes; and• the unique semi-arid environment through which mostof the river flows.Significant Ecological Asset SitesThe broad overview of the hydrology of the River Murraypresented above reveals wide variations across thedifferent sections. Such variations are formallyacknowledged through the work of the Murray-DarlingBasin Commission in association with Victoriangovernment agencies. Under the Commissions’s TheLiving Murray, First Steps program, six unique and at risksignificant ecological asset sites along the length of theRiver Murray have been identified. The sites are shownin Figure 4.5 and include:• Barmah-Millewa Forest;• Gunbower-Koondrook-Perricoota Forests;• Chowilla Floodplain, Lindsay-Wallpolla;• Lower Lakes, Murray Mouth and Coorong; and• River Murray Channel. Each of these sites has their own unique naturalhydrology. Replication of these hydrological conditions toachieve environmental outcomes is the basis of theirlisting (see chapter 15 for discussion of environmentalflows). All of these sites, except for the Lower Lakes,Murray Mouth and Coorong, are relevant to the RiverRed Gum Forests Investigation.Figure 4.5 Location of significant ecological asset sites.SOUTHAUSTRALIAChowillaFloodplain(includingLindsay- Wallpolla)4DarlingRiverNEW SOUTH WALES6River MurrayChannel5Murray Mouth,Coorong &Lower lakes3HattahLakes2Gunbower,Koondrook-PerricootaForestsEdwardRiverBarmah-MillewaForest1GoulburnRiverMurrumbidgeRiverVICTORIASource: MDBC (2005)48 River Red Gum Forests Investigation 2006
