employee to EAP for a performance or
behaviour related problem.
There has been an increase in the number
of employees who remained with TSAM
following EAP intervention.
Apart from the obvious benefits of
contributing to a healthy, happy and
productive workforce, another benefit of EAP
is that employees are more likely to remain
with TSAM following EAP intervention.
HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and
substance abuse
The impact of HIV/AIDS on employees,
their families and the community is of critical
concern to TSAM. In recent years extensive
voluntary HIV testing and counselling services
have been offered to employees. Voluntary
counselling and testing (VCT) continues to
be well utilised by employees.
TSAM has successfully maintained the
public/private partnership with government
in the provision of anti-retroviral (ARV)
medication to HIV positive, uninsured
employees. There has been a steady uptake
of enrolment in the ARV programme, and there
has been an increase in the number of HIV
positive employees who have successfully
returned to work from medical disability.
There is also an effective TB management
programme in place. Treatment has been
introduced on site using the Direct Observed
Treatment Shortcourse programme, where
medical staff observe people taking their
medication for TB. One key action is to
educate employees about the linkage
between HIV and TB, so that TB patients
are encouraged to be tested for HIV. In the
reporting period there has been a drop in
reported TB cases and an increase in the
number of TB diagnosed employees who
have agreed to an HIV test.
With the cooperation of unions, random gate
tests continue at TSAM, and if workers are
found to be under the influence of drugs or
alcohol, TSAM renders a supportive service
SOCIAL ASPECTS
Eight clinics provide primary health care to employees.
to get these staff members onto relevant
dependency programmes. Over the reporting
period there was an increase in the number of
employees who, after having been assisted,
still remain with the company.
TSAM conducted 105 961 gate tests for
alcohol in FY08 and 107 349 in FY09. The
incidence of positive gate tests has declined
over the reporting period and there has been
an increase in the number of employees
referred to EAP following a positive alcohol
test.
