TSAM partners with 50/50 TSAM partnered with SABC 2 television show 50/50 by sponsoring a Land Cruiser 70 station wagon for production purposes. 50/50 has been on the air for 24 years and is dedicated to conservation. TSAM also sponsored the show with a Hilux 3.0 D-4D double cab 4x2 as a prize for a viewer’s competition. The addition of the Land Cruiser 70 station wagon into the production fleet is a confirmation of TSAM’s dedication to conservation. SPECIAL FEATURE Joint local action prevents flooding in Prospecton Following devastating floods at TSAM’s manufacturing operations in Prospecton during March and June 2008, the company partnered with other business operations in the area, the local council and other stakeholders to establish the Isipingo Catchment Management Forum (CMF). The CMF is an offshoot of the Isipingo/ Mbokodweni Catchment Management Forum, a statutory body run by the Department of Water Affairs, in which TSAM also participates. The CMF consists of various businesses in the area, South Durban Basin, eThekwini Metro, Roads and Stormwater maintenance, KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife (who looks after the estuary) and Metro Pollution control. The CMF’s main objective is to identify and monitor any possible restrictions on the natural water flow of rivers and canals in the area since obstructions in the canals and at the mouth of the Isipingo River increased the flood damage. The problem is that Prospecton is a very low lying and flat area that floods easily. In June 2008, the Prospecton Plant recorded around 350mm of rain, while areas further south recorded up to 700mm. issues identified to receive urgent and ongoing action are: • The canals become overgrown with reeds and water hyacinth, preventing adequate drainage during a flood event. • The sandbar at the mouth of the Isipingo River needs to be kept at a height that would allow the river to breach naturally in the event of a flood. The cooperative approach of the CMF is making a difference, and the canals are being successfully kept clean of plant overgrowth. If there is a forecast of heavy rains, a CMF member checks the sandbar at the river mouth and requests the Department of Roads and Stormwater to lower the level if necessary.
Production and economic performance were impacted by the worldwide economic recession, which began in FY08 and extended through FY09. In response to the severe business climate, TSAM and local dealers worked hard to deliver as many vehicles as possible to customers, as well as making continuous, concerted cost-reduction efforts. Due to the economic downturn there was an embargo on capital expenditure and therefore capital expenditure was lower in FY09.
