Corporate social activities
TSAM’s Corporate Social Investment
activities focus on communities located within
a 50km radius of the Prospecton Plant in
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and the Sandton office
in Gauteng, mainly within the communities
where the majority of the company’s
employees reside.
Below is a summary of projects implemented
during the reporting period:
Education based projects
Rural Schools Maths, Science, Literacy
and Technology Project
The project focuses on developing the maths,
science, technology and literacy skills of
educators and learners at rural schools. In
FY09, Ilovu Primary School was the selected
beneficiary. TSAM made funds available for:
• Purchasing teaching aids;
• Purchasing library books; and
• Organising science demonstrations. Dr
Govender from the University of KwaZulu-
Natal is in the process of establishing a
science club at this school that will also
involve other primary schools in the
area.
Interactive dictionaries were also donated
to the school. These dictionaries include
educational computer games that improve
English literacy. Thanks to this project Ilovu
Primary School is better equipped to teach its
learners.
Toyota Teach Primary Schools
Toyota Teach aims to create a model for future
education, working to improve teaching and
learning by uplifting the skills of educators.
The programme has impacted more than 40
schools in the Durban area and benefits more
than 1 000 teachers and 45 000 pupils.
Once a year, the Toyota South Africa
Foundation trustees and members visit a
Toyota Teach School and an extra donation

SOCIAL ASPECTS
TSAM engages with key stakeholders, including local communities, in a wide range of
activities. The aim is to contribute to the development of thriving and vibrant societies.
Areas of focus include education, empowerment and the environment.
TSAM supports rural schools by developing the skills of educators and providing reading material to learners.
Stakeholder engagement
Key stakeholders include groups,
organisations and/or partners who have
an influence on or who are impacted by
TSAM’s activities and operations. The
objective of engaging with stakeholders is
to develop and maintain good, harmonious
relationships and mutual understanding, and
to contribute to the development of vibrant
societies. It is not just an exercise in risk and
reputation management. TSAM engages
with the following stakeholder groups:
• Employees and employee
representatives;
• Other original equipment
manufacturers;
• Local communities, including community
based organisations, community
representatives and leaders;
• National Business Initiative;
• Centre for Development & Enterprise;
• KZN Donor Forum;
• South Durban Basin Area Management

Teach Primary Schools Project;

Department of Environment, Economic
Development, and Trade and Industry;

Industry;
