Digital Certificates Overview<br />
A digital certificate testifies to the holder’s unique identity, and can<br />
be regarded as an electronic form of a passport or identity card.<br />
Certificate holders use their certificates to establ<strong>is</strong>h their identity and<br />
to gain entry to secure areas in the digital world, such as websites and<br />
networks, and to secure the transfer and receipt of digital messages<br />
by email.<br />
Digital certificates are <strong>is</strong>sued and validated by Certification<br />
Authorities (CAs), in the same way that a passport office <strong>is</strong>sues and<br />
validates a passport. A CA <strong>is</strong> a body or entity that enables two<br />
individuals to trust each other’s authenticity, because the identity of<br />
each individual <strong>is</strong> certified by a common trusted third party.<br />
The concept of third-party trust through a CA <strong>is</strong> illustrated below:<br />
