A major disadvantage of the enterprise CA hierarchy model is that
the benefits of secure communication are limited to the domain of the
root CA. Users within the enterprise CA hierarchy need to
communicate securely also with external entities such as customers,
suppliers and business partners.
The recommended enterprise CA model combines a well-structured
enterprise CA hierarchy with a commercial root CA. This model
provides a common denominator for external communication through
a trusted third party, without compromising the organization’s
security framework.
The following diagram provides an example of a combined enterprise
and commercial CA model. This model enables secure transaction
processing and data exchange between the sales and purchasing
departments of two companies, through a common commercial
root CA.
