ENGINE COOLING CIRCUITTHERMOSTATA thermostat controls the coolant temperature as the coolantcontinuously flows through the closed cooling circuit. Whenthe engine is first started the closed thermostat preventscoolant from flowing (some coolant is by-passed through ahole in the thermostat to prevent the exhaust manifold fromoverheating). As the engine warms up, the thermostat graduallyopens. The thermostat is accessible and can be checked, cleaned, or replaced easily. CarTy a spare thermostat and gasket.DRAINING THE COOLANTRemove the manifold pressure cap, loosen the water drainlocated on the left side of the engine block just under themanifold and loosen the heat exchanger drain plug.REFILLING THE COOLANTSlowly pour clean premixed coolant into the manifold.NOTE: Open the air bleed petcock on the exhaust manifold tohelp remove air from the system. When a steady flow ofcoolant appears at the drain, close the water drain plug, fillthe system and close the petcock.Start the engine and bring it to operating temperature.Monitor the coolant in the manifold and add as needed. Fillthe manifold to the filler neck and install the pressure cap.Remove the cap on the coolant recovery tank and fill withcoolant halfway between LOW and MAX, and replace thecap.Run the engine and observe the coolant expansion flow intothe recovery tank.TO COOLANTRECOVERY TANKPRESSURE CAPFROM COOLANTRECOVERY TANKCOOLANT EXPANSIONCOOLANT RETRACTIONAfter checking for leaks, stop the engine and anow it to cool.Coolant should drain back into the cooling system as theengine cools down. Add coolant to the recovery tank ifneeded. Clean up any spilled coolant.THERMOSTAT TESTIf you suspect a faulty thermostat, place it in a pan of water andbring to a boil. A working thermostat should open about 1/2".NOTE: Periodically check the condition of the pressure cap.Ensure that the upper and lower rubber seals are in goodcondition and check that the vacuum valve opens and closestightly. Carry a spare cap.A WARNING: Always check the coolant level at thecoolant recovery tank. If the engine is /Jot, allow it tocool before checking. HOT COOLANT and STEAM cancause INJURY or DEATH! 00 not check the coolant atthe manifold unless the engine is cool!Engines & Generators13
