LAY-UP & RECOMMISSIONINGGENERALMany owners rely on their boatyards to prepare their craft, including engines and generators, for Jay-up during the offseasonor for long periods of inactivity. Others prefer toaccomplish lay-up preparation themselves. The procedures which follow will allow you to perform yourown lay-up and recommissioning, or wi1l serve as a checklistif others do the procedures. These procedures should provide protection for yourengine/generator during a Jay-up and also help familiarizeyou with its maintenance needs. If you have any questions regarding lay-up procedures, caByour local servicing dealer. He will be more than willing toprovide assistance.FRESH WATER CODLING SYSTEMA 50-50 solution of antifreeze and distilled water is recommendedfor use in the fresh water cooling system at all times. This solution may require a higher concentration of antifreeze, depending on the area's winter climate. Check the solution tomake sure the antifreeze protection is adequate.Should more antifreeze be needed, drain an appropriate amountfrom the engine block and add a more concentrated mixture.Operate the engine to ensure a complete circulation and mixtureof the antifreeze concentration throughout the coolingsystem. Then recheck the antifreeze solution's strength.LUBRICATION SYSTEMWith the engine warm, drain all the engine oil from the oilsump. Remove and replace the oil filter. (Place some papertowels and a plastic bag around the filter to catch the oil duringits removal.)When installing the new oil filter, be sure to apply a smallamount of oil on the rubber sealing gasket at the base of thefilter. Fill the sump with the correct amount of oil for yourengine model. (Refer to the SPECIFICATIONS section ofthis manual.) Use an oil with an API specification of SJ.Run the engine and check for proper oil pressure and makesure there are no leaks or fuel spills.FUEL SYSTEMTop off your fuel tanks with unleaded gasoline of 89 octaneor higher. A fuel conditioner such as STABIL gasoline stabilizershould be added. Change the element in yourgasoline/water separator and clean the metal bowl.Re-install and make certain there are no leaks. Cleanup any spilled fuel.Start the engine and allow it to run for 5-10 minutes. Checkfor any leaks that may have been created in the fuel systemduring this servicing and correct them. Clean up any fuelspills.RAW WATER CIRCUITClose the through-huH fitting. Remove the raw water intakehose from the fitting. Place the end of this hose into a 5-gallonbucket of clean fresh water. Before starting the engine, checkthe zinc anode in the heat exchanger on the engine and cleanor replace it as required. Clean the raw water strainer, if oneis installed on the inside of the hull.Start the engine and anow the raw water pump to draw thefresh water through the system. When the bucket is empty, stop the engine and refill the bucket with an antifreeze solutionslightly stronger than needed for winter freeze protection10 your area.Start the engine and allow all of this mixture to be drawnthrough the raw water system. Once the bucket is empty, stopthe engine. This antifreeze mixture should protect the rawwater circuit from freezing during the winter lay-up, as wellas providing corrosion protection.Remove the impeller from your raw water pump (someantifreeze mixture will accompany it, so catch it in a bucket).Examine the impeller. Get a replacement, if needed, and acover gasket. Do not replace the impeller (into the pump)until recommissioning, but replace the cover and gasket.A CAUTION: Do not leave the engine's old engineoil in the sump over the lay-up period_ Engine oil andcombustion deposits combine to produce harmfulchemicals which can reduce the life of your engine'sinternal parts.Engines & Generators34
