Multilateral banksThe SCCF under the Convention was established in 2001 to financeprojects relating to adaptation; technology transfer and capacitybuilding;energy, transport, industry, agriculture, forestry andwaste management; and economic diversification. GEF is entrustedto operate this fund. With respect to adaptation, the SCCF assistsdeveloping countries, particularly the most vulnerable to the impactsof climate change, in implementing adaptation measures that reducethe vulnerability and increase the adaptive capacity of countries. As ofOctober 2008. 13 contributing participants (Canada, Denmark., Finland,Germany, Ireland, Itlay, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,Switzerland and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and NorthernIreland) had pledged contributions to the SCCF. The total amountpledged to date is the equivalent of USD 91 million.Adaptation activities funded under the SCCF will be based on nationalcommunications, NAPAs (in the case of LDCs only), national andregional relevant studies, and available information. The SCCFwill support capacity-building for preventive measures, planning,preparedness and management of disasters relating to climate change,including contingency planning for droughts and floods in areas proneto extreme weather events. Activities funded under the SCCF will alsoinclude improving the monitoring of diseases and vectors affected byclimate change, improving disease control and prevention, forecastingand early warning systems, and strengthening and establishing nationaland regional centers and information networks for rapid responseto extreme weather events.
