The statistical data analysis and the underlying stochastic modeling of
processes have become a standard application in many areas of technology,
science and economy. This development has been strongly encouraged by
the wide availability nowadays of corresponding computer technology
(hardware and software).
The applications of statistical methods in data analysis vary from
fundamental descriptive and explorative methods (e.g. possibilities of
graphical representation of data) to highly-developed inductive methods (e.g.
hypothesis tests or non parametrical regression methods).
An efficient representation of data by means of different indices (e.g. for
location and variation) and graphical means can for example yield insights
into the data structure of test results. Using inductive statistical methods (e.g.
correlation analysis and regression analysis or significance test) it is possible
to draw statistically founded conclusions and for example decide whether an
effect is statistically significant or whether a purely random behaviour has
been observed.
Knowledge of the various statistical methods is fundamental for the adequate
planning of empirical trials (e.g. test planning).
Fundamental knowledge of probability calculus is required in particular to
deal adequately with inductive statistical methods.
The practical application of statistical methods occurs by using suitable
software. Standard methods have already been implemented nowadays in
widely-available standard software (e.g. MS-Excel) but highly developped
special statistics software packages have meanwhile also become available
to everyone for free as open source software (e.g. R). An introduction to the
statistics package R constitutes part of this lecture.
clear representation of complex relations
Students after completion of this course will be able to identify new subject
areas in need of further research, to describe the essential core tasks of a
research resp. development paper and to effect the transfer of research
results into practice.
The aim is to acquire independently new subject areas for research and
development tasks, which e.g. due to economical or normative necessities
are deemed worthy of being researched and developed. In order to be able
to describe new issues, students have to learn methodologies for compiling
already available knowledge and describing required know-how. In this
connection, in addition to the ability to perform research, an understanding
spanning all subjects and materials for available and new technologies is
required. The result can thus be that students, in the framework of this
course, describe the contents of the Project Thesis and of the Master’s thesis
and combine them if necessary with a research proposal.
 methodology of research
“International wood industries” provides insights into the global wood
industries – from the forests to the consumers. Particular attention will be
paid to the industries in Asia, including Japan, and North America.
Wood is the dominant building material for North America’s residential
buildings – more than 80 percent of the more than 1.5 million residential new
single family homes that are built annually are timber buildings. There is a
very efficient distribution and retail system for the large quantities of materials
that are needed to construct these buildings. Whereas the building market is
dominated by softwoods, large quantities of hardwoods are harvested and
used for furniture, flooring and kitchen cabinets, among others.
Globalization has become a reality – much so for the wood industries. Tree
growth, processing and manufacturing of wood and wood products take
place where the costs are lowest around the globe. Transportation has
become a less decisive issue in determining the best (cheapest?)
manufacturing location. The course will show recent developments and
trends that will shape the future.
Globalization is the new driving force for almost all economies throughout the
world. This trend is also shaping the wood industries – one might just want to
look at the increasing shipments of German softwoods to the United States.
The course tries to give students an idea of what is happening globally,
where the future markets are, where the timber will come from and how small
and medium-sized companies can successfully adapt to the new realities.
The acquired skills will enable students to be of great benefit in practice to
companies in the private sector, authorities or institutes thanks to their
knowledge from the respective MRUs. Additionally, they are well acquainted
with the newest technologies in an international environment as well as being
in a position to make quick and confident decisions in an increasingly
globalized competition.
The consolidation of the knowledge acquired in the Diploma and/or Bachelor
degree course is based on the principle of “Learning and research with direct
transfer into practice”!
The module paper can basically be oriented in three directions:
 constructive design
 theoretical work
 experimental work
The aim of the module paper is to explore in depth and transfer the
knowledge and methodologies acquired in the courses. The paper has the
features of a small project and is to be dealt with accordingly in a targetoriented
fashion. Depending on the subject and coach, it may be possible
and/or desirable to produce the module paper in a team. As a rule, the topic
is set by the coordinator of the relevant MRU together with the students. It is
in principle possible to work together with businesses.
Studierenden. Eine Kooperation mit Unternehmen ist grundsätzlich möglich.
Admittance to the Master Programme of Wood Technology
A requirement is the completion of:
MF 11 - Building Physics for Design
Sound insulation and room acoustics in practice
Students should become familiar with design aspects of room and building
acoustics relevant in practice. They should in particular be able to plan
simple rooms in terms of room acoustics. Furthermore, they will learn how to
assess building components as to their acoustic properties and thus
establish sound insulation documentation for simple buildings.
Sound insulation in timber buildings
Without in-depth knowledge of sound insulation, it is impossible to achieve
structurally flawless solutions in timber construction. Students should
therefore learn the construction parameters in timber construction relative to
sound insulation and how to implement them in planning. They should in
particular be able to recognize, assess and avoid sound insulation problems
of timber buildings relating to sound transfer at low frequencies. New insights
from research in timber construction with respect to improved sound
insulation will be imparted. On the basis of the calculation of typical building
mistakes, the students will be prepared for planning in practice.
Admittance to the Master Programme of Wood Technology
Zulassung zum Masterstudium Holztechnik;
Students have the opportunity in the frame of a project thesis of writing a
paper on a scientific level. Students should work in an independent and selfdirected
manner. This applies to both the working process and to the
organisation and planning. The project thesis means holistic learning. In
addition to the cognitive level, the students will also be challenged affectively,
emotionally, socially and physically. The central notion is that of activityoriented
learning. It is also product-oriented: at the end of a project, there is a
product that constitutes a solution to the original problem.
Observations
Bemerkungen
Problem bietet.
The project thesis can basically be characterized by one of three aspects:
 structural design
 theoretical work
 experimental work
The aim of the project thesis is to work in-depth and transfer the knowledge
and methodology gained in the course. The work is in the form of a project
and is accordingly target-oriented. Depending on the topic and the advisor, it
may be possible and even desirable to carry out the project in a team. The
advisor will normally define the topic together with the students. A
cooperation with enterprises is possible in principle.
