As of December 31, 2011, there are 1,185 femalemembers out of 12,595 total Elks Members or 9.4% ofour membership.As of December 31, 2011, we have 126 Lodges withfemale members out of a total of 255 Lodges or 49.4%of our Lodges.So to put it all together – GUYS and GIRLS,I’m saying…If you want to have an Elks boys nightout……go for it.If you want to have an Elks girls nightout……go for it.If you guys want to play Elks old timer men’shockey and slurp a few with the boysafter……go for it.If you ladies want to have an all Elks girls stitchand bitch and sip a little wine on the lastWednesday of every month……go for it.All the activities above are no different than the boy/girlthing that happens within a family that has children ofboth sex. Yet that same family unit that allows the kidsto grow up as they should, still has ongoing familyevents that includes every member of the family. Thenormal family unit is “inclusive” with all family membershaving equal rights and opportunities to contribute tothe success of the family unit. At the same time the kidshave the freedom to choose to play with Lego insteadof Barbie dolls or take dance lessons instead of karate.Elkdom is no different. An Elks Lodge is a “home” andwithin that home are all its family members includingthe siblings (don’t we call each other Brothers andSisters?). As a family unit we accomplish things togetherthat we could not accomplish if we were homeless orjust one person. It is Equality, Love, and Kindness withina family that helps the children grow up to continueto promote these same ideals from generation to generation.We need to be with the times to ensure thefuture of Elkdom.Let’s get back to that Golden Rule thing.Ladies, please come and join us and be an equal memberof the Elks of Canada if your objectives are familyfocused…but please join some other organization ifyour motivation is solely based on pursuing genderissues.Gentlemen, please welcome females into the family ofElkdom at every possibility…but if you cannot leave thepast behind and embrace the present and future thenplease step aside and join some other organization thatdoes not promote family focused involvementBECAUSE WE DO.And oh yeah, just to keep harmony in the family, youguys from Mars it’s time we try to be nice for no otherreason than being nice by “putting the seat down”. Andfor you ladies from Venus, for the sake of harmony it’stime that perhapseveryonce in a whileyou “put theseat up” just tobe nice to thebeings fromMars.That’s the Golden Rule.By W.J. I noticed immediately that the seat was down.Does this mean that the Lodge was putting the toilet on thelawn of female members or had a male Elk just decided tobe “nice” and put it down just in case?12
BRITISH COLUMBIASister Dina WolanskySeasons Greetings:How time flies. It’s hard to believe I’m half wayinto my term as BC President. It seems ourConference and Convention was just a shortwhile ago. Christmas is getting into full swing; thelights are going up, along with decorations. Manyof you are making loads of goodies for guests,even some for gifts. Santa is booked at the mallsand children are excited getting their wish listsready when they go to see him.During my visits this year to Lodges I want tothank Lodges in BC for your hospitality and fraternalismshown to me and my husband Mike.Elkdom is certainly alive and well in this Province.I look forward to more visits in the New Year,meeting more members of this great Order.As I think of my theme “CARRY THE TORCH” Isee members working hard together to carry thisorganization towards our 100 th Anniversary celebration.The members who are listed on yourCharters worked hard to start these Lodges, it isnow our obligation to make sure this Order goeson, and yes we can.To the staff at Grand Lodge, thank you for all yourhelp and support, you are always ready to helpeven with the seemingly dumb questions.I have a quote I would like to share with you.“YOU CAN’T MOVE FORWARD IF YOU ALWAYSLOOK BACKWARD”.
