YELLOWKNIFE’S STANTONTERRITORIAL HOSPITALINFANT HEARING PROGRAMPermanent childhood hearing loss is the MOST COMMON congenital abnormality present at birth. It occursmore frequently then any other screened condition.Six in 1000 babies are born with some degree <strong>of</strong> hearing loss. Stanton Territorial Hospital averages 600 birthsannually, which means up to 4 babies could be born with a permanent childhood hearing loss each year.Deaf and hard <strong>of</strong> hearing infants who are identified and treated within the first 6 months <strong>of</strong> life achieve significantlyhigher language skills than children who are identified at a later stage.The <strong>Elks</strong> & Royal Purple Fund for Children have been supporting the Infant Hearing Program at Stanton for sixyears during which time 3000 babies have been screened.This past year, monies donated were used to purchase a VisualReinforcement Audiometry toy system which combines motion andattention getting light patterns to successfully perform pediatrichearing testing.
