Association des implantéscochléaires du QuébecC’est avec un immense plaisir que je vous rendscompte de l’implication des Loges Élans et de laPourpre Royale envers l’Association des implantéscochléaires du Québec.Pour un enfant qui naît sourd ou qui le devient, latechnologie de l’implant cochléaire lui permettra derejoindre le monde des entendants en lui offrant lapossibilité d’entendre, de parler et de communiquerdans la société. Pour y arriver, il y a plusieurs étapesdont particulièrement la chirurgie, la programmation del’appareil et la réadaptation dans un centre spécialisé.Ces étapes peuvent se prolonger sur une période allantjusqu’à trois mois de façon intensive. Étant donné quel’on s’adresse à des enfants en bas âge, la présencedes parents est essentielle tout au long du processus.La chirurgie et la programmation se déroulentexclusivement à Québec et la réadaptation n’est pasofferte dans toutes les régions du Québec. Ainsi, lesparents demeurant en région éloignée et qui doiventaccompagner un enfant qui reçoit un implantcochléaire devront faire face à des coûtssupplémentaires d’hébergement, de transport etsouvent de perte de revenus, car ils devront quitter unemploi pour pouvoir bénéficier de ces servicesprofessionnels.Au Québec, la contribution des Élans de Vanier,secondé par les Loges d’Alma, de Kénogami et deVictoriaville est notoire. L’aide financière reçue estredistribuée aux familles par notre Programme d’aide àl’hébergement. Pour les familles avec des revenusmodestes, nous leur offrons des logements, aunombre de trois, à moindres coûts. Si ces logementsne sont pas disponibles, nous accordons une aidefinancière pour compenser et ainsi permettre des’assurer que l’enfant puisse recevoir tous les servicesnécessaires.De plus, les Élans de Vanier, avec notre collaboration,organisent annuellement une activité de financementdont les profits serviront à alimenter notre Programmed’aide à l’hébergement destiné particulièrement auxfamilles.Cette implication majeure des Loges Élans estessentielle et tellement appréciée. Grâce à cettegénérosité, l’Association des implantés cochléaires duQuébec peut continuer sa mission de soutien et d’aidedans le domaine de l’audition avec une clientèleimportante d’enfants porteurs d’implant cochléaire.Martin Girard, PrésidentAssociation des implantés cochléaires du Québec* * * * * * * * *Sir/MadamI am very pleased to send you a report of the Elks andRoyal Purple’s involvement with the QuebecAssociation for Cochlear Implants (Association desimplantés cochléaires du Québec)Cochlear implants enable children, who have beendeaf since birth, to rejoin the hearing world by offeringthem the possibility of hearing, speaking and communicatingin society. To reach this point there are severalsteps, principally; surgery, programming the device,and rehabilitation at a specialized centre. These stepscan extend over a period that lasts as long as threeintensive months. Because this addresses very youngchildren, it is essential that parents be presentthroughout the process.The surgery and program are exclusive to QuebecCity, and rehabilitation is not offered in all the regionsof Quebec. Moreover, parents living in outside areas,who have to accompany children receiving cochlearimplants, are faced with additional costs for accommodation,transport, and very often, loss of revenue asthey have to leave their employment to benefit fromthese professional services. In Quebec, contributionsfrom the Vanier Elks, seconded by the Lodges in Alma,Kénogami, Victoriaville are notable. The financial aid isredistributed among families through our Assistanceand Accommodation Program. For families with modestincomes, we offer one of our three accommodationsat minimal costs. If these accommodations arenot available, we grant financial assistance to compensateand ensure that the children receive all the necessaryservices.Furthermore, in collaboration with the Vanier Elks, ayearly fund drive is organized from which the profits areused to finance our Assistance and AccommodationProgram, destined primarily to families.This major involvement on the part of the Elks Lodge isessential and greatly appreciated. YELLOWKNIFE’S STANTONTERRITORIAL HOSPITALINFANT HEARING PROGRAMPermanent childhood hearing loss is the MOST COMMON congenital abnormality present at birth. It occursmore frequently then any other screened condition.Six in 1000 babies are born with some degree of hearing loss. Stanton Territorial Hospital averages 600 birthsannually, which means up to 4 babies could be born with a permanent childhood hearing loss each year.Deaf and hard of hearing infants who are identified and treated within the first 6 months of life achieve significantlyhigher language skills than children who are identified at a later stage.The Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children have been supporting the Infant Hearing Program at Stanton for sixyears during which time 3000 babies have been screened.This past year, monies donated were used to purchase a VisualReinforcement Audiometry toy system which combines motion andattention getting light patterns to successfully perform pediatrichearing testing.
