The Elks and Royal PurpleSaskatchewan Pediatric AuditorySPARCRehabilitation CentreWorking with Families of Children with Hearing Loss for 35 YearsOnce again it is time to reflect back on the past year’saccomplishments. We had a very successfulWalkathon in Nipawin this past fall.Shannon and Justin addressing the BanquetNipawin Elks & Royal Purple Walkathon 2011families move to the Province, the birth rate increases.Newborn hearing screening has resulted in some childrenbeing picked up at a younger age.We would like to take this opportunity to thank membersof the Saskatoon Royal Purple for their kind donation. This allowed us to buy an iPad for Alexa, the auditoryverbalspeech pathologist with SPARC. The iPad hasprovided us with another tool to reach families who livea great distance from our clinic in Saskatoon. Its ease ofoperation and two way video system has proven to bevery helpful. Young children love it and it has been veryhelpful with cochlear implant mapping.Sebastian & Spencer in NipawinShannon Fuchs and Justin Lacelle were our guestspeakers and their sons Spencer and Sebastian stolethe show. Sebastian benefited from early detection ofhis hearing loss. He was diagnosed at nine months ofage and fitted with hearing aids shortly after. He nowhas appropriate speech and language for his age. There has been an increase in the number of childrendiagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss over thepast two or three years. This is likely the result of thechanging Saskatchewan population. As more youngZoe and her mom Melissa Brown playing with iPadduring cochlear implant mapping session44
