It is suitable for anyoneinterested in a career in the public services suchas the armed forces, the fire service, the police, theprison service and Customs and Excise. You shouldhave and be prepared to develop a good level ofphysical fitness and enjoy participating in sport andoutdoor pursuits.You will study a range of units covering healthand fitness for entry to services, map reading,personal skills for public service and leadership,practical teamwork, public service incidents and anintroduction to expedition skills.Additionally you will have the opportunity to studyFunctional Skills in English, mathematics and ICT.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONYou will have the opportunity to experiencepublic service activity off-site as a group and withrepresentatives of the services.NEXT STEPYou could progress at <strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> to the BTEC Level2 Diploma in Public Services or other related Level 2courses. Students over the age of 19 withoutthe standard entry requirements may be eligiblefor this course, subject to previous experience andinterview.THE COURSEThis course is intended to give a good introductionto a career in any of the uniformed services suchas the armed forces, the ambulance service, the fireservice, the police, the prison service and Customsand Excise. However, these services have their ownselection procedures and successful completion of theFirst Diploma does not guarantee entry to the servicechosen.You will require a reasonable standard of fitnesstogether with a genuine interest in participating insport and outdoor pursuits.You will study units covering a range of topicsincluding public service employment, public serviceskills, improving health and fitness for entry to publicservice, adventurous activities and teamwork forpublic service, land navigation by map and compassand driving and its relationship to public service.Additionally you will have the opportunity to studyFunctional Skills in English, mathematics or ICT.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION<strong>The</strong> public services require hard work, leadership andinitiative. <strong>The</strong> Level 2 Diploma course will draw outand develop these qualities.
