S<strong>in</strong>ce all <strong>the</strong> blood bags will already be tested by <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r center, disposal of empty<br />

blood bags should be done by landfill. Gloves should be cut and put <strong>in</strong> bleach for at least<br />

one hour and <strong>the</strong>n disposed as normal waste.<br />

6. Documentation & records<br />

The center should ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> proper records for procurement, cross match<strong>in</strong>g and issue of<br />

blood and blood components. These records should be kept for at least 5 years.<br />

7. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of doctors and technicians, who will be responsible for <strong>the</strong> Blood Storage<br />

Center, should be carried out for 3 days <strong>in</strong> an identified center as per <strong>the</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

Pre-transfusion check<strong>in</strong>g. i.e. patient identity and group<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Cross match<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Compatibility<br />

Problems <strong>in</strong> group<strong>in</strong>g and cross match<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Troubleshoot<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Disposal of blood bags<br />

The states will have to identify <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions where tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> staff responsible for<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> blood bank is to be held. These could be <strong>the</strong> blood banks at Medical<br />

Colleges, Regional Blood Banks, Indian Red Cross Blood Banks, or any o<strong>the</strong>r well<br />

setup, licensed Blood Bank, provided <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>frastructure for<br />

undertak<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will be for three-days duration dur<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong> Medical Officer and <strong>the</strong><br />

technician from <strong>the</strong> identified FRUs will be posted at <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />
