The affluent generated from <strong>the</strong> hospital should conform to limits as laid<br />

down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handl<strong>in</strong>g) Rules, 1998<br />

(Schedule V).<br />

The liquid and chemical waste should not be used for any o<strong>the</strong>r purpose.<br />

For discharge <strong>in</strong>to public sewers with term<strong>in</strong>al facilities <strong>the</strong> prescribed<br />

standard limits should be ensured.<br />

9. SAFETY MEASURES<br />

9.1 Personal Protection:<br />

<strong>Hospital</strong> and health care authorities have to ensure that <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g personal<br />

protective equipment are provided.<br />

i) Gloves<br />

a) Disposable gloves<br />

b) Latex surgical gloves<br />

c) Heavy duty rubber gloves (uptil elbows) for cleaners.<br />

ii) Masks: Simple and cheap mask to prevent health care workers aga<strong>in</strong>st:<br />

aerosols splashes and dust.<br />

iii) Protective glasses.<br />

iv) Plastic Aprons.<br />

v) Special Foot wear, e.g., gum boots for <strong>Hospital</strong> waste Handler.<br />

9.2 Immunization aga<strong>in</strong>st Hepatitis B and Tetanus shall be given to all hospital staff.<br />

9.3 All <strong>the</strong> generators of bio-medical waste should adopt universal precautions and<br />

appropriate safety measures while do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>rapeutic and diagnostic activities and<br />

also while handl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Bio-Medical waste.<br />

9.4 All <strong>the</strong> sanitation workers engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g and transport<strong>in</strong>g should be<br />

made aware of <strong>the</strong> risks <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> handl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bio-medical waste.<br />

9.5 Any worker report<strong>in</strong>g with an accident/<strong>in</strong>jury due to handl<strong>in</strong>g of biomedical waste<br />

should be given prompt first aid. Necessary <strong>in</strong>vestigations and follow up action as<br />

per requirement may be carried out.<br />

9.2 Report<strong>in</strong>g Accident & Spillages<br />

The procedure for report<strong>in</strong>g accidents (as per Form III of BMW Rules. 1998)<br />

should be followed and <strong>the</strong> records should be kept. The report should <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong><br />

nature of accidents, when and where it occurred and which staffs were directly<br />
