8. TREATMENT OF HOSPITAL WASTE (Please see Rule 5. Schedule<br />
V & VI)<br />
8.1 General waste (Non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-<strong>in</strong>fectious). The safe<br />
disposal of this waste should be ensured by <strong>the</strong> occupier through Local<br />
Municipal Authority.<br />
8.2 Bio-Medical Waste<br />
Monitor<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erator/autoclave/microwave shall be carried out once<br />
<strong>in</strong> a month to check <strong>the</strong> performance of <strong>the</strong> equipment. One should ensure:<br />
The proper operation & Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erators/autoclave/<br />
microwave.<br />
Atta<strong>in</strong>ment of prescribed temperatures <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> chambers of<br />
<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>eration while <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> waste.<br />
Not to <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erate PVC plastic materials.<br />
Only skilled persons operate <strong>the</strong> equipment.<br />
Proper record book shall be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erator/autoclave/<br />
microwave/shredder. Such record book shall have <strong>the</strong> entries of period of<br />
operation, temperature/pressure atta<strong>in</strong>ed while treat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> waste quantity<br />
for waste treated etc.<br />
The scavengers shall not be allowed to sort out <strong>the</strong> waste.<br />
Proper hygiene shall be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed at, both, <strong>the</strong> waste treatment plant site<br />
as well as <strong>the</strong> waste storage area.<br />
Categories 4,7,8 & 10 should be treated with chemical dis<strong>in</strong>fectant like 1%<br />
hypochlorite solution or any o<strong>the</strong>r equivalent chemical reagent to ensure<br />
dis<strong>in</strong>fection.<br />
8.2.1 Inc<strong>in</strong>eration: The <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erator should be <strong>in</strong>stalled and made operational as per<br />
specifications under <strong>the</strong> BMW Rules, 1998 (schedule V) and an authorization<br />
shall be taken from <strong>the</strong> prescribed authority for <strong>the</strong> management and handl<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
bio-medical waste <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stallation and operation of treatment facility as per<br />
Rule 8 of Bio-Medical Waste (Management & Handl<strong>in</strong>g) Rules 1998. Specific<br />
requirement regard<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>erator and norms of combustion efficiency and<br />
