Section TwoEconomyThe main industries in the Shire areresource projects (iron ore and gasextraction), salt production, and cattleand sheep grazing, with some fishing andtourism. The main industry by employmentis Construction (10,439 workers), by valueadded is Mining ($4 billion) and by output isalso Mining ($14.3 billion).The Shire has also a significant Fly in Flyout (FIFO) workforce estimated at around10,000. Population growth is expected tocontinue, largely a result of investmentin new mining operations and continuedglobal demand for iron ore and natural gas.The Shire is served by the Karratha Airport,which has undergone significant growthover the last five years and is currentlyhandling around 15,000 passengermovements per month with over 70 flightsper week including the destinations ofPerth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.The Ports of Dampier and Cape Lambertservice the Shire and account for morethan 250 million tonnes per annum ofexports.“Karratha Airport is one ofthe busiest regional airportsin Australia approaching OneMillion passengers per year.”[8] Shire of Roebourne Strategic Community Plan 2012-2022
Section TwoA Shire onthe MoveRoebourne is a Shire on the move. Withnearly $70 billion dollars worth of resourcerelated infrastructure projects underconstruction in the West Pilbara, and afurther $17 billion under consideration,there is significant demand for labour andland. Building on a period of sustainedgrowth, the current population of 20,00040000is forecast to increase to nearly 31,000in the next 10 years.
