At the same time, these operations have major impacts on the environment, both locally andglobally, through their emissions and use of resources. Energy production also impacts local communitiesin the surrounding environment, such as through plant construction and mining.Sustainable financial performanceFossil-based energy production results in high CO 2emissions, andVattenfall therefore has a great social responsibility to reduce itsemission levels – mainly CO 2emissions – but also other emissions,such as SO 2, NO xand particulate matter. Vattenfall is also working toimprove resource efficiency at its plants and take responsibility forimpacts on the local environment. Vattenfall strives to build up mutualtrust through openness and involvement in local communities andaspires to be a responsible corporate citizen. At the same time, thenational energy mix and conditions for energy supply must be consideredwithin the individual countries in which Vattenfall operates.To be among the companies that lead development towardenvironmentally sustainable energy production, Vattenfall has setsustainability targets in the environmental area, where reducing thecompany’s CO 2exposure is a central part of the strategy. In addition,Vattenfall has a target to grow in renewables and increase energyefficiency.
