Developments during the year | Sustainable production“Vattenfall is one of Europe’slargest producers of syntheticgypsum and supplieshigh-quality gypsum to theconstruction industry.”Optimised use of by-productsBy-products, mainly ash and gypsum, are produced from the combustionof solid fuels, such as lignite and hard coal, and from flue gascleaning. The volumes of waste and by-products are a direct effectof how much fuel is used and how effective the flue gas cleaning is.Vattenfall optimises the quality of by-products to facilitate reuse. Forexample, ash from Vattenfall’s hard coal–fired plants is used in theproduction of cement and asphalt for road construction. Ash from lignite-firedplants is often transported back to the mining area, where itis used as land filler for landscape restoration. In addition, Vattenfall isone of Europe’s largest producers of synthetic gypsum (a by-productof flue gas desulphurisation) and supplies high-quality gypsum to theconstruction industry.Waste managementAll of Vattenfall’s operations generate waste, including the operationand maintenance of power plants, electricity and heating networks,as well as mining, and construction and dismantling of power plants. The activities conducted at Vattenfall’s offices also generate waste, although this accounts for only a minor portion compared with theother parts of the Group’s operations. Certain types of waste can beused in other activities, such as ash from coal combustion for cementmanufacturing, or it can be recycled, such as waste paper for paper orpackaging production. Read more about radioactive waste on page 41.Activities during the yearEnergy efficiency measures were carried out both in Vattenfall’s ownoperations and among customers via the products and services thatVattenfall offers. Read more on pages 23 and 29.Within the framework of R&D projects Vattenfall has studiedhow bottom ash from waste incineration can be washed for use asconstruction material instead of gravel. The aim of the project is toincrease the share of ash that can be reused in other applications. In 2014 targets were formulated and adopted at the local level inthe Nordic operations to reduce the use of chemicals and improvewaste handling in accordance with the waste hierarchy.Planned activitiesWork on improving efficiency in Vattenfall’s use of resources will continue. Methods will be developed for using ash in accordance with thewaste hierarchy principles. Handling of radioactive waste will continuein a responsible manner. A study of water use will be conducted toidentify potential improvements in the German and Dutch operations.Waste and by-products, ktonnes6,0005,0004,0003,0002,0001,000Re-use (sold on the market)RecyclingLandfill0Hazardouswaste 1NonhazardouswasteAsh fromhard coalAsh fromligniteAsh frombiomassSlag fromwasteincinerationGypsumOtherby-productsktonnesHazardouswaste 1Non-hazardouswasteAsh fromhard coalAsh fromligniteAsh frombiomassSlag from wasteincinerationGypsumOtherby-products2014 123 416 578 5,334 42 245 3,000 482013 194 349 738 5,388 67 330 3,219 73Waste from construction and demolition make up a small portion compared with the by-products that are created at combustion plants. The greatest volume ofby-products consists of ash from the lignite-fired power plants. This ash is used almost exclusively to refill landscape in connection with restoration following miningactivities.1) Includes fly ash from waste incineration.40 Vattenfall Annual and sustainability report 2014
