RainbowColours <strong>of</strong> InnovationLearning by Doing : Science Workshop at National School, Virar<strong>Jan</strong>uary 23, <strong>2011</strong>Educational Science Workshop:Science principles taught through toy-making <strong>and</strong>experiments can be fun. Abhyudaya Sitaras weretaken for an Educational Science Workshop atNational School, Virar. The workshop began with alecture on introduction to science, its progress <strong>and</strong> itsuses. The sitaras were then exposed to differentgrowin gElephanta Caves which is located at Gharapuri Isl<strong>and</strong>amidst the Arabian Sea. The mentors <strong>and</strong> menteeswere paired so that mentors can take the sitarasaround to see the caves. This facilitated the sharing <strong>of</strong>thoughts <strong>and</strong> knowledge among the two. Facultyfacilitators too interacted with the sitaras <strong>and</strong> got toknow them better. After lunch, sitaras engaged invarious games with their mentors.Sitaras at Science Workshopscientific experiments <strong>and</strong> were also taught how tomake various objects <strong>and</strong> toys which produceddifferent visual <strong>and</strong> sound effects (e.g. animatedobjects). The Sitaras were taken to the Biology Labwhere they could observe the specimen <strong>of</strong> humanbody organs, <strong>and</strong> the specimen <strong>of</strong> animals <strong>and</strong>reptiles. Interesting information on different species <strong>of</strong>snakes was shared with the Sitaras.Picnic to Elephanta Caves:SPJIMR's faculty who oversee the mentoring processtook a day <strong>of</strong>f with mentors <strong>and</strong> mentees to ElephantaCaves. Elephanta Caves, being a place <strong>of</strong> historicimportance as well as far from the city hustle wasespecially selected with the purpose <strong>of</strong> giving anopportunity to spend time in a natural environmentaway from home <strong>and</strong> strengthen the bond betweenmentors <strong>and</strong> mentees.8 faculty facilitators, 168 mentors <strong>and</strong> 132 menteescame for the picnic. The group reached The Gateway<strong>of</strong> India at 9.00am from where all boarded the ferry toA Talk on ParentingMentors with their MenteesFebruary, <strong>2011</strong>A talk on parenting was conducted for the parents <strong>of</strong>Abhyudaya Sitaras by Clinical Psychologist Ms.Supriya Nair.
