For decades,Green Supply chain (GrSC) has been one <strong>of</strong> theburning topics, discussed at various global forums. Toaddress this issue, the theme <strong>of</strong> the OperationsConclave was chosen as “Green Supply Chain: A CostBenefit or a Cost Burden”.The Operations specialization participants set the tone<strong>of</strong> symposium with a presentation on Green SupplyChain – Evolution <strong>and</strong> Future. Dr. Umesh Bahadur,HOD – Ops Dept, delivered an introductory address,emphasizing the field-practices <strong>and</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> the topicfor symposium.In his keynote speech, Mr. B. K. Dutta - ED, BPCLemphasized the need for maintaining a sustainablegrowth model <strong>and</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> taking a triplebottom line approach towards environment, society<strong>and</strong> the economy.<strong>Jan</strong>uary 13, <strong>2011</strong>The panelists for discussion included Mr. D B Raju -ExVP, L&T; Mr. A C Sharma - Head CorporateSustainability, L&T; who in their presentations dweltupon growing shift in the GrSC from being traditionalcost reduction to a value creation initiative <strong>and</strong> L&Tinitiative in Green House Gas Emissions Inventory <strong>and</strong>carbon footprint mapping which had resulted in thereduction <strong>of</strong> the company's Carbon Footprint. Mr LalitBhagat, Ford Motor spoke about the best GrScpractices in the automotive sector <strong>and</strong> how they areapplied in the spheres <strong>of</strong> logistics, packaging &manufacturing.Dr K Ganesh - IBM India, dealt with new initiatives likeGreen design, Green Sourcing, Low Carbon FootprintTransport <strong>and</strong> Reverse Logistics. He explained howcompanies achieved a balance between economic<strong>and</strong> environmental benefits.3 SPJIMRnews
