Rainbow Colours of InnovationJanuary 15, 2011Management lessons from DharaviIt was a truly multi cultural experience for the studentsof SPJIMR when they played host to Ericssonemployees hailing from across the globe. It was adiverse group of 25 trainees from countries rangingfrom Belgium, Australia, and Spain to South Africa.Each of the 10 SPJIMR students interacted on aprofessional basis with two trainees and gave them anNGOs learn the value of ‘Branding’February 28-March 2, 2011Fifth time in a row, SPJIMR's Socialbrics, the Centre forTraining & Management for Social Development,organised a three day workshop on 'Creating an NGOBrand' at SPJIMR. Directors and senior executives ofNGOs from all over India like Sense International(Gujarat), Learn Empower Uplift (Delhi), Sol's Arc(Mumbai) & Save the Children India (Mumbai)participated in the workhop. Dr. Ashita Sharma wasthe workshop facilitator.Over three days participants answered brand buildingquestions, discovering a consumer insight anddiscussing the emotional truth of the NGOs for brandcreation.On the last day the participants made presentations onthe proposed brand blueprint.Socialbrics ‘influencing change’ in real timeThe Ericsson Group at Dharaviidea of the work being done at Dharavi. They walkedthe streets of Dharavi, guiding the visitors and givingthem an understanding of the successful pocket ofentrepreneurs in the heart of the largest slum dwellingin Asia. After an introduction to the business concept ofrecycling industry running in the area by Magsaysayaward winner Dr. Jockin Arputham, the group walkedthrough the narrow streets and interacted with theworkers and owners of each enterprise. The queriesranged from how often the workers took a break toquestion aspirations of the residents.The visit helped participants realize how a small placecan do business of such large volumes, without anytraining. The insightful interaction with the delegatesfrom Ericsson was richly rewarding for SPJIMRparticipants.Socialbrics is organising Thursday Clinics for onemonth for the brand building participants in whichDr. Ashita Sharma will help them solve the problemsfaced building their brand. Participants will present thefinal blue print of their Brand ManagementConsultancy for NGOs.Socialbrics supports NGOs via real time consultancyaccording to the need felt by the organization. It is ledand supported by senior faculty members of SPJIMR &domain expert consultants.Socialbrics has successfully completed a consultancyassignment for Childfund India's Disha Project. Itinvolved streamlining appointments & issues related toit. Advocates Mulla & Mulla were consulted to givelegal dimension for this project. Rainbow Colours of InnovationA PEEP INTO TARANG 2011 : Cultural fest for FMBTarang is a student initiated, inspired and createdcultural fest, to which, the faculty members and thestaff of FMB department are mere supporters andencouragers (motivators). If a person has an idea,what they need is a supportive and conduciveenvironment to implement that idea. That's true for anygiant company or a small shop and these wellsummarizedin lessons from Tarang.Tarang is conducted by making teams participate invarious events. These teams are created on random bypicking the names of students from the total pool.According to one of the team leader, out of 30members in his team, only 10 were most often seenparticipating. This was true for all the teams. This leadsto a lesson that in an organization there will always bethree types of people: the one “who will participate”,the one who will see “what is happening” and the onewho will “not know what is happening”. It is the role ofthe captain to identify the first type of people.On day two of Tarang, there was only one event –Treasure Hunt. It was the most important event of theentire fest. The treasure hunt was a massive event andthe teams were required to spread out all acrossMumbai and get their pictures with particular type ofperson or doing a particular activity or action. Therewere totally 84 tasks. The range of tasks spanned from“taking a photo of a team member along with amember of the organizing team” to “taking a photo onan aeroplane in Titanic pose”. The time given tocomplete task list was 4 hours.This type of an event involved a great deal of planningand execution efficiency. All the jargons ofmanagement literature such as co-ordination,teamwork, managing resources, convincing, selling,exploring contacts / networking, culminated in twowords – execution efficiency.One of the most important learning points thatemerged is the balance of task and timeliness. Everytask had to be done within a green time-line, but thequestion is – ‘what's more important?’. The treasurehunt event has a list of stories to tell. By the end of dayApril, 2011two the teams were having fun and learningmanagement lessons. They had developed excellentrelationship with their teammates.On day three there were once again three tasksCelebrating Tarangplanned. They were Collage, Dance & Maxi Parti. MaxiParti is “whatever you want to do” event, which shouldinvolve all the members of the team.The participants developed collage and it wasamazing to see the way ideas got presented. Twoteams had prepared the collage on “corruption”, butthe presentation of one of the team was much betterParticipants making collage during Tarangthan the other one. Here comes one more lesson. Abusiness idea can be presented with absolutelydifferent materials and in different manner but onlythose win, who can communicate the idea in the bestmanner.Tarang fest is an important instrument in the learningprocess at the FMB Program of SPJIMR.
