Rainbow Colours <strong>of</strong> Innovation<strong>Jan</strong>uary 15, <strong>2011</strong><strong>Management</strong> lessons from DharaviIt was a truly multi cultural experience for the students<strong>of</strong> SPJIMR when they played host to Ericssonemployees hailing from across the globe. It was adiverse group <strong>of</strong> 25 trainees from countries rangingfrom Belgium, Australia, <strong>and</strong> Spain to South Africa.Each <strong>of</strong> the 10 SPJIMR students interacted on apr<strong>of</strong>essional basis with two trainees <strong>and</strong> gave them anNGOs learn the value <strong>of</strong> ‘Br<strong>and</strong>ing’February 28-March 2, <strong>2011</strong>Fifth time in a row, SPJIMR's Socialbrics, the Centre forTraining & <strong>Management</strong> for Social Development,organised a three day workshop on 'Creating an NGOBr<strong>and</strong>' at SPJIMR. Directors <strong>and</strong> senior executives <strong>of</strong>NGOs from all over India like Sense International(Gujarat), Learn Empower Uplift (Delhi), Sol's Arc(Mumbai) & Save the Children India (Mumbai)participated in the workhop. Dr. Ashita Sharma wasthe workshop facilitator.Over three days participants answered br<strong>and</strong> buildingquestions, discovering a consumer insight <strong>and</strong>discussing the emotional truth <strong>of</strong> the NGOs for br<strong>and</strong>creation.On the last day the participants made presentations onthe proposed br<strong>and</strong> blueprint.Socialbrics ‘influencing change’ in real timeThe Ericsson Group at Dharaviidea <strong>of</strong> the work being done at Dharavi. They walkedthe streets <strong>of</strong> Dharavi, guiding the visitors <strong>and</strong> givingthem an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the successful pocket <strong>of</strong>entrepreneurs in the heart <strong>of</strong> the largest slum dwellingin Asia. After an introduction to the business concept <strong>of</strong>recycling industry running in the area by Magsaysayaward winner Dr. Jockin Arputham, the group walkedthrough the narrow streets <strong>and</strong> interacted with theworkers <strong>and</strong> owners <strong>of</strong> each enterprise. The queriesranged from how <strong>of</strong>ten the workers took a break toquestion aspirations <strong>of</strong> the residents.The visit helped participants realize how a small placecan do business <strong>of</strong> such large volumes, without anytraining. The insightful interaction with the delegatesfrom Ericsson was richly rewarding for SPJIMRparticipants.Socialbrics is organising Thursday Clinics for onemonth for the br<strong>and</strong> building participants in whichDr. Ashita Sharma will help them solve the problemsfaced building their br<strong>and</strong>. Participants will present thefinal blue print <strong>of</strong> their Br<strong>and</strong> <strong>Management</strong>Consultancy for NGOs.Socialbrics supports NGOs via real time consultancyaccording to the need felt by the organization. It is led<strong>and</strong> supported by senior faculty members <strong>of</strong> SPJIMR &domain expert consultants.Socialbrics has successfully completed a consultancyassignment for Childfund India's Disha Project. Itinvolved streamlining appointments & issues related toit. Advocates Mulla & Mulla were consulted to givelegal dimension for this project.
