34 <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board of <strong>County</strong> Commissioners7. Exempt Employeesa. Exempt employees are compensated based on the totaljob rather than the number of hours worked. As such,exempt employees are expected to allocate whateveramount of time is necessary to accomplish the tasksassigned to them and to successfully execute the dutiesand responsibilities of the position. Although forty (40)work hours is the typical standard, exempt employees areoften required to work extended or irregular hours abovethe forty (40) hour work schedule to perform successfully.Exempt employees do not earn overtime pay for thesehours over and above the standard work schedule.b. Exempt employees who are absent from the workplacedue to personal reasons or sickness for less than a full daybut more than half of their scheduled work day (e.g., 4hours for 8 hour day, 5 hours for 10 hour day) are requiredto use accrued leave (annual or sick, as applicable) for thenumber of hours equal to half of the work day. However,exempt employee salary will not be reduced for partialday absences if no accrued leave is available. In such case,leave will be advanced to the exempt employee and usedprospectively to avoid having unpaid time for a partialday absence. Exempt employees are not required to useaccrued leave for workday absences of less than half oftheir regularly scheduled hours.c. Supervisors are responsible for setting work schedules,allowing or denying partial-day absences, optionallyrequiring that the absences be for the full scheduledday, and for monitoring the performance of exemptemployees. Abuse of this privilege and/or substandardjob performance by an exempt employee will lead tocorrective action, up to and including termination.
