We appointed thedirection of prayer which you formerlyfollowed in order that We might distinguishthose who follow the Messenger from thosewho turn on their heels. It was indeed ahard test except for those whom God hasguided. God would never have let your faithbe in vain. God is Compassionate andMerciful to mankind. (143)We have seen you often turn your facetowards heaven. We shall, therefore, makeyou turn in prayer towards a direction youwill be happy with. Turn your face, then,towards the Sacred Mosque; and whereveryou all may be, turn your faces [in prayer]towards it. Those who have been grantedrevelations in the past know well that it isthe truth from their Lord. God is notunaware of what they do. And neither may you follow theirdirection of prayer, nor would they evenfollow one another’s direction. If you wereto follow their whims and desires after allthe knowledge that has been given to you,you would certainly be among thewrongdoers. (145)Those to whom We granted revelationknow it as well as they know their ownchildren, but some of them knowinglyconceal the truth.
