4(4444(44420Safeguards for FinancialTransactionsBelievers, when you contract a debt for afixed term, put it in writing, and let ascribe write it down for you with fairness.No scribe shall refuse to write as God hastaught him. So he shall write. And let theone who incurs the liability [i.e. the debtor]dictate; and [in so doing] let him beconscious of God his Lord and notdiminish anything of it. If he who incursthe liability is weak of mind or body, orunable to dictate himself, then let hisguardian dictate with fairness. Call in twoof your men to act as witnesses, but if twomen are not available, then a man and twowomen, whom you consider acceptable aswitnesses, so that if either of them shouldmake a mistake, the other will remind her.Witnesses must not refuse when they arecalled in. Do not be averse to writing downdebts, be they small or great, together withthe time when they fall due; that is moreequitable in the sight of God and lendsgreater credence to the testimony and ismore likely to spare you any doubt.
