ABOUT THE SERIES EDITORDr. Adrianne Bendich is Clinical Director of CalciumResearch at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, where sheis responsible for leading the innovation and medical programs insupport of TUMS and Os-Cal. Dr. Bendich has primary responsibilityfor the direction of GSK’s support for the Women’s HealthInitiative intervention study. Prior to joining GlaxoSmithKline,Dr. Bendich was at Roche Vitamins Inc., and was involved withthe groundbreaking clinical studies proving that folic acid-containingmultivitamins significantly reduce major classes of birth defects.Dr. Bendich has co-authored more than 100 major clinical researchstudies in the area of preventive nutrition. Dr. Bendich is recognizedas a leading authority on antioxidants, nutrition, immunity, andpregnancy outcomes, vitamin safety, and the cost-effectiveness ofvitamin/mineral supplementation.In addition to serving as Series Editor for Humana Press and initiating the development ofthe 15 currently published books in the Nutrition and Health series, Dr. Bendich is the editorof nine books, including Preventive Nutrition: The Comprehensive Guide for Health Professionals.She also serves as Associate Editor for Nutrition: The International Journal of Applied andBasic Nutritional Sciences, and Dr. Bendich is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Women’sHealth and Gender-Based Medicine, as well as a past member of the Board of Directors of theAmerican College of Nutrition.Dr. Bendich was the recipient of the Roche Research Award, a Tribute to Women andIndustry Awardee, and a recipient of the Burroughs Wellcome Visiting Professorship in BasicMedical Sciences, 2000–2001. Dr. Bendich holds academic appointments as Adjunct Professorin the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at UMDNJ, Institute ofNutrition, Columbia University P&S, and Adjunct Research Professor, Rutgers University,Newark Campus. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Women.
