Philbeth Enterprises
A Seaman’s Investment
The start up investment in this company comes from the retirement savings of a seaman.
Located in a 2,000 square meter area in Cansojong,Talisay, is the workshop of Philbeth Enterprises.
Originally established as a company using shells and later stones as raw materials, the company is
known for its simple and highly primed wood products made into custom-designed lounge chairs,
tables, china cabinet, and sideboard, among others, as well as furniture components and semi-finished
products based on client’s specifications.
Initially set up by Richard Paires and Eduardo Paires
who was joined by two other brothers, all of them
seamen, Philbeth derived its name from Philamer
(one of the brothers) and his wife, Beth, who
invested more in the company.
Philbeth primarily catered to the sub-contracting
needs of large furniture exporters based in Cebu
with Casa Cebuana Incorporada as its main
customer. This method of outsourcing work has
been utilized by almost 96% of the furniture
exporters in Cebu.
Technologically handicapped due to inadequate
equipment and machineries, the company cannot
compete with other manufacturers in terms of quality
and production volume. Thus, the company sought
assistance from DOST through one of its programs,
SET-UP.
One set of furniture equipment consisting of six
machines was provided through SET-UP - planer,
jointer, overhead routers, radial arm saw, and
spindle shaper. The workers who operated the
machines were graduates of the Don Bosco
Technology Center.
Through these equipment, production volume
and annual gross sales increased by about 30%.
Additional workers were employed.
Starting in 1998, the Furniture Industry gradually
experienced a crisis. With the cheap China-made
furniture penetrating the market and the global
crisis, specifically the one that affected the US,
furniture export was badly hit. For Philbeth, this
was most unexpected. The orders started to
dwindle until it reached its lowest in 2009.
Now at a standstill, Philbeth is hopeful that other
alternatives await them.
