From The Philippines To The Orient
In a Philippine Airlines flight from Australia to Manila, a passenger is served a Chewy Fruit Bar
and a Chewy Fruit Mix.
These snack items come from Island Fruits, a brand of Orient Foods Industries Corporation. Orient
Foods is a food processing company that produces dehydrated tropical fruits such as dried papaya,
jackfruit, pineapple and mango. Its production facility is located in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.
Established in the 1980’s. Orient Foods began
its operations in the southern islands of Negros
Oriental. Today, the island remains the hub of key
production activities utilizing the latest dehydration
technology, producing the dehydrated or dried fruit
products that meet the stringent requirements of the
international market.
Through its Manufacturing and Productivity
Extension Program or MPEX, the company was
assessed and recommendations made. In 2008,
Orient Foods became a beneficiary of SET-UP
as well as the Cleaner Production Technology
and Good Manufacturing Practices programs.
The company’s dryer at the time of the study, was a
20-year old concrete 4-tunnel dryer by steam piped
from a wood-fired furnace type and gas-fired boiler.
This method was considered obsolete and inefficient
and cannot meet the required increase in production
to meet the demands of its buyers.
Technology upgrade was made possible through
SET-UP. A cost effective mechanical dryer for
mangoes was acquired. This type of dryer, which
allows for batch type drying, reduced drying time
to almost half the time it took the old dryer to do
the job. It offers operational flexibility as the dryer

can be used exclusively for a certain fruit. With a
capacity of 1000 kg. of fresh sliced mangoes, the
requirements of the market would not be difficult to
meet. Heat is supplied by steam so it reduces fuel
consumption. In addition to the equipment upgrade
is the packaging design extended by DOST which
greatly improved the image of the product as well
as its shelf life.
With these technological improvements, the
production of dried tropical fruits and the annual
gross sales increased by at least 20 percent.
Shipment is done regularly to its customers,
mainly repackers, in Australia, Hongkong, Middle
East, France and New Zealand. Local dealers and
retailers in different parts of the country are also
supplied.
Future plans include product development of
healthy varieties to include not only fruits but
vegetables, more export markets in Europe,
accreditation, and supplying pasalubong centers,
hospitals, schools and other institutions, and
perhaps, a new and bigger plant.
With a world that is ready to accept healthy foods,
the great potential is there, just waiting to be
explored.
