Raw Brown Sugar Milling Company, Inc. It Definitely, “Rocks!” Its label reads, “100% sugarcane juice. No preservatives added.” It has to pass the tests of the senses- sight, taste and smell- during the production process. It is, “Muscovado Rocks.” Why is Muscovado preferred as a sweetener by health-conscious people? Muscovado is nutritiously richer than other brown or refined sugars and retains most of the natural minerals inherent in sugarcane juice. Unlike white refined sugar, Muscovado is processed without the use of chemicals and it is only 80 percent sucrose. The increasing demand for Muscovado has jacked up its price. While there are many Muscovado producers across the country, most of them use the traditional production processes and most of their product is sold only in the local market. A new player in this sweet game, Raw Brown Sugar Company, owned by the Alcantara Family, has set its eyes on producing sugar for the export market. Established only in 2008 with 15 employees, Raw Brown now produces its sugar in their newlyconstructed building which houses 30 workers operating upgraded equipment. Muscovado Rocks has penetrated the Japanese market, a tough feat for exporters, considering the very stringent importation rules of Japan. Other foreign markets are being explored but the entry into Japan has become a ticket for its easy acceptance in the other countries. For Atty. Alcantara, Raw Brown is a dream fulfilled. As related by his son and General Manager, Nikki Alejandro, even as his dad was managing their sugar 67 DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY VII Product Catalogue 2011 plantation, he was already health-conscious. One day, he read an article on the dangers of consuming white sugar. That started his passion to produce a healthy alternative. Networking and research began in 2008. An assessment on the processing technology was conducted by the ITDI , the Industrial Technology Development Institute, one of the research and development institutes of DOST. It recommended ways of improving the usual processing technology by adding innovations. With the ITDI clean production technology, Raw Brown has acquired the capability to produce quality Muscovado according to Good Manufacturing Practices. In 2010, the Muscovado was launched. Another program of DOST, SET-UP was on hand to assist Raw Brown to upgrade its technology. The cube sugar making machine will allow the company to produce Muscovado that is different from most muscovado products sold in the market. The band sealer is needed to ensure the hygienic and efficient packaging of assorted muscovado products, including cubes and powder, in plastic pouches. The form fill sealing machine ensures the hygienic and efficient packaging of powdered Muscovado in convenientlysized sachets. While awaiting this cube making machine, the product is now exported to Japan, Korea and Russia. Packaging has been greatly improved. New foreign buyers have expressed interest in the product. Strategies of creating demand for both the foreign and local markets have been implemented through participation in exhibitions, fairs and food tasting. In an ASEAN Food and Beverage Exposition in Japan in 2010, Raw Brown was one of the top three chosen to represent the Philippines. Considering that the company is relatively new in the business, it was a great honor. Raw Brown was again invited in the same event in early 2011 held in Korea. Application for Organic Certificate is in process. Product development is also continuing – Muscovado in sachet, Muscovado Syrup, Sukang Kidlat, Wine and Rhum. Atty. Alcantara has passed on the management of this business to the younger generation. His young, talented and good-looking sons, Nikki and Ian, are the General Manager and Operations Manager, respectively. They, too, have learned that the production of quality Muscovado is a combination of art and science. The day is awaited when the cube sugar making machine will finally operate. Those irregularly shaped, “crazy cuts”, will soon be part of the sweet history of Muscovado. The precisely-cut cubes will be a sight to behold! Raw Brown Sugar Milling Company, Inc.
