Being in the business since the late 60s, experience
greets a customer right at the very doorstep of this
company. Dumaguete Kwik-Way and Engineering
Works is the trade name of the business operated
by Masangkay Machine Works, Inc. Kwik-Way has
been in the business of engine reconditioning,
machining and fabrication, catering to all engine
and vehicle owners all over the province of Negros
Oriental and some parts of Negros Occidental. Its
long list of satisfied customers is a validation of its
excellent and quality service.
Dumaguete Kwik-Way is under the umbrella corporation
of Kwik-Way, which had its origins in the 50s
and had grown to 14 branches all over the country.
A product of the retirement of Atty. Magsangkay, the
business, since 1989, has been managed by his
son, Ariel, a Mechanical Engineer.
As part of its engine reconditioning job, Kwik-Way
provides reboring services. However, its portable
reboring machine does not allow for the reboring
of cylinders below or beyond a certain size, forcing
the use of lathe machine. Aside from the procedure
which does not allow for high precision work, it also
turns off some big customers who demand superior
quality. They get their reboring jobs done in Cebu or
in nearby Negros Occidental. The acquisition of a
stationery reboring machine was therefore desired.

A friend of the Provincial Head of DOST, Engr. Ariel
knew that DOST had a program to assist SMEs.
However, he was not one who would jump easily at
the opportunity. His apprehensions of government
bureaucracy cautioned him. But moved by the
sincerity of support of the agency, he became
a beneficiary of the Manufacturing Productivity
Extension (MPEX) Program of DOST and in 2006
availed of SET-UP.
Technology upgrade through the acquisition of a
reboring machine was realized. Operating time was
reduced by 100%, from three hours to one and a
half. Daily production output was also increased by
100% from two to three reboring jobs per day to four
to six. The maximum reboring capacity was upgraded
from five to eight-inch diameter cylinder bore generating
additional market. Beyond eight inches, this
can be done with the use of an adopter without
having to resort to a lathe machine. Labor and
electricity costs likewise lowered. Less electricity
was consumed and only one person operates the
machine.
With simpler and precise operation, work quality
was improved and more satisfied customers were
added to its list. Annual gross reboring revenues
correspondingly increased by 100%. The acquisition
placed Negros Oriental at par with its neighboring
areas.
The gains derived from this development contributed
greatly to the company’s purchase of additional
10 new equipment which can be used to operate
another shop. Half of the space of a 500 square
meter lot is now being used for additional works
including the second floor of their existing building.
Expansion of customers to include more from various
industries and not only the land transportation sector
is also being done.
Leopoldo Acosta, who has been with the company
since 1961 as a helper and has been its Manager
since 1970, truly loves his work and dealing with
customers has always been a pleasure to him.
