Wellmade Motors & Development Corp. Touching Lives Beyond Profit In a company where workers do not have a punch card and yet they exhibit excellent work habits, one can assume that the company has significantly touched their lives and they are giving back what the company has given them - trust and dignity. Wellmade is one such company. “When I started trading as a business in 1988, growth was simply nowhere to be found. I saw the opportunity in metalworking, but all odds were against me since I was told I am not an Engineer.” These are the words of Philip Tan, President and CEO of Wellmade Group of Companies. His achievements and numerous awards have proven all his critics wrong, including his father. Wellmade Motors and Development Corporation is the first Filipino machine shop with an ISO-90012008 Global Certification. It was twice awarded by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with the Most Outstanding Achievements in Productivity, Quality and Innovations. DTI also awarded Wellmade as one of the Best Outstanding Consumer Welfare Company for three consecutive years. Mr. Tan was named as one of the Fifty Men and Women of Science in the Philippines by DOST and the Most Outstanding Alumni of the University of San Carlos in the Field of Entrepreneurship. Wellmade was an ECOP finalist as an Employer of the Year and the Most Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year 2008, an award given by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Philip, as he is fondly called, utilized human resource competency and professional management to mold his 57 DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY VII Product Catalogue 2011 employees to become responsible, accountable and efficient workers. To gain as much knowledge and knowhow in his area of business, he attended various trainings conducted by government and private agencies. Unlike in most companies where the staff is sent, he personally attended these sessions. As a management sponsored scholar, he also attended local and international trainings. Wellmade Motors and Development Corporation is an engineering-based enterprise that specializes in remanufacturing of metal component parts, on-site/ in-place machining, hot/cold fusion welding and machining/ fabrication of high precision parts for manufacturing and transport industries. Due to the company’s wide exposure, the encounter with DOST as a government partner was inevitable. The objectives of applying for SET-UP were focused on expanding the existing metalworking capabilities from customized parts to high precision and the fabrication of gear parts to serve not only the transport but also the manufacturing and power plant industries. Global competitiveness is also desired through modernization of machinery and technology as well as developing the competencies of workers. It was through SET-UP that the precision radial drill and tangential automatic gear hobbing machines were acquired. Profitability increased twice its targeted percentage. Not only were the existing ones retained but many more were added to its long list of satisfied customers. With its accomplishments through SET-UP, DOST extended a grant to Wellmade in its effort to develop, the first of its kind Filipino Metalworking Software, in the Philippines. With four plants, including its franchises, these facilities are connected to the server in Cebu for real-time transactions covering ERP modules in Preventive Maintenance, HRM, CRM, Supply Chain, Asset Management, Operations, Production and others, except Accounting. Late in 2010, Wellmade has franchised its Metalworking Enterprise inaugurating its first outlet in Davao City. By the second half of 2011, another one will be opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is currently conducting similar negotiations in two cities in Visayas and Mindanao. By 2015, Wellmade expects to open ten franchises, both in the Philippines and in Southeast Asian countries, exporting highly skilled Filipino workers. For now, Wellmade continues to practice its standard of excellence. It is working on Social Accountability 8000, a Global Certification, the highest form of certification that a company can achieve in the Field of Corporate Social Responsibility, an act of giving back its blessings to God and country. There is no stopping for Wellmade. It has definitely tasted the glorious fruits of its humble beginnings. DOST made things happen, a partnership of a lifetime.
