DIVISIONAL STRATEGIC PRIORITIESExperiential LearningMission and OverviewIn keeping with our belief that “learning happens everywhere,”SA/ERM units seek to proactively engage studentsin opportunities to learn by applying knowledge in real-worldenvironments. Experiential learning may occur on or offcampus in a variety of contexts, but requires critical reflectionof the learning experience.Experiential learning may include: Internships, communityservice, academic service learning, peer education, research,study abroad, committee work, and leadership. Our vision isthat all students at SBU will have completed at least onesubstantive experiential learning activity prior to graduation.Many units within the Division coordinate some form ofexperiential learning activity. Several offer internships, somecoordinate community service and academic service learningprojects, and organize and manage peer education programs,and many provide opportunities for students to serve onuniversity committees and in leadership roles.The Career Center plays a central role in creating and coordinatingmany experiential learning activities. The CareerCenter is the defacto Community Service Office, managingtwo grant-funded programs (AmeriCorps and VISTA), coordinatingthousands of service hours, posting several hundredservice opportunities annually, managing the Virtual Centerfor Community Service Web site, coordinating the campuswideCommunity Service Committee, and working closelywith faculty to develop academic service learning projects.In addition, the Career Center serves as the InternshipOffice, offering a centralized posting service for employerson and off campus to post internships (paid, credit, volunteer),coordinating Job and Internship Fairs several timeseach year, routinely consulting with employers andfaculty who wish to create opportunities, and managingEXT 288 and EXT 488, credit-bearing designators to supportstudents in all majors engaged in internships outside theirmajor department.Strategic Priorities 2009-2010Goals > Progress Toward GoalsCreate opportunities for student engagement in experientiallearning.• Eleven departments within the division of <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Affairs</strong>and Enrollment and Retention Management offer internshipsat the graduate and undergraduate levels, involvingmore than 100 students annually.• Six departments offer formal peer education programs,involving more than 100 students annually.• More than 250 students serve as Resident Assistants.• More than 40 students serve on the <strong>University</strong> studentconduct board, participating in extensive training to hearcases of misconduct and make sanction recommendations.• The Career Center worked closely with several departmentsat the <strong>Stony</strong> <strong>Brook</strong> <strong>University</strong> Medical Center to create newinternships, both clinical and nonclinical, for students. In2009-2010, 144 interns worked in 13 SBUMC departments.• The Career Center held six job and internship fairs andposted close to 900 internships on ZebraNet to expandopportunities for SB students in terms of internships andcommunity engagement.• The <strong>Student</strong> Health Service serves as a formal clinicalplacement site for medical and nursing residents–approximately50 per year.• The Career Center has more than 1,100 active partnershipswith nonprofit and health care organizations, and agrowing list of campus departments including SBUMC.• Supported Alternative Spring Break Program, which involved50 students engaged in rebuilding devastated communitiesin flood-ravaged Georgia.Link experiential learning with formal curricular activities.• Support and advise General Education committee on potentialfor including experiential learning activities as a part ofnew general education requirements.• Established common divisional learning outcomes and assessmentstandards for more than 1,000 student employeesas part of <strong>Student</strong> Employee Learning Outcomes(SELO) initiative.• Managed and closely monitored 245 internships via EXT288 and 488.• Career Center and College of Business partnered for an academicservice-learning project: 29 students worked inteams on service projects for eight nonprofit organizations.• Provided consultation to academic departments on incorporatingservice projects as part of their classroom learning.Successfully integrated service learning into three courses.8 STUDENT AFFAIRS AND ENROLLMENT AND RETENTION MANAGEMENT 2009-2010 • STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
DIVISIONAL STRATEGIC PRIORITIESEstablish robust offerings of Service Learning and CommunityService activities.• More than 36,000 service hours completed through CareerCenter programming (not student organization-sponsoredservice learning activities).• More than 2,880 volunteers recruited for communityservice programs.• Raised $10,515 for community agencies.• Planned and organized <strong>Stony</strong> <strong>Brook</strong> Community OutreachDay involving 28 nonprofits and 31 student organizations.• VISTA partnered with 42 student groups on 16 serviceprojects involving 733 students. “Clubs for a Cause”,“Quads for a Cause”, and “Commuters for Causes” outreachefforts raised $8,014 for community agenciesthrough service fundraising projects.• Island Harvest Community Service project in partnershipwith UG College of Leadership and Service, involving 400freshmen preparing 2,465 food packs for 1,300 underprivilegedLong Island children.• <strong>Student</strong> Heath Advisory Council and Influenza-like IllnessTask force efforts to successfully educate and vaccinatestudents on H1N1 influenza virus involved more than 120students from health programs and peer educators programs.Effort was recognized with <strong>University</strong>’s OutstandingCommunity Service Award.Points of PrideNational Recognition: <strong>Stony</strong> <strong>Brook</strong> <strong>University</strong> was named tothe 2009 U.S. President’s Higher Education CommunityService Honor Roll.Grants: Secured external funding and grants to supportexperiential learning opportunities: American Reinvestmentand Recovery Act funding ($23,400) to support AmeriCorpsprogramming; AmeriCorps continuation funding ($273,264)for three years; VISTA grant for fourth year (equivalent to$30,000 salaried position); and Newman’s Own FoundationCampus Community Challenge Grant ($7,500) to supportAlternative Spring Break Outreach.AmeriCorps Program: <strong>Student</strong> completion rate was 100percent for the sixth year in a row with more than 21,000hours of service (2009-2010) completed and 1,376 volunteersrecruited by AmeriCorps members to participate inservice projects that serviced 303 at-risk youth and 1,156blood donors.Meaning of Service Program Through the NY Council for theHumanities: Ninety-four percent of AmeriCorps membersindicated very high understanding of why they are engagedin service work; 84 percent report ability to communicatetheir values and ideas about service to others.
