The First BBBB Conference
on Pharmaceutical Science, a
successful start to a new drug
research conference in East
Europe
More than 200 participants from 20
countries were attracted to the 1st BBBB
Conference on Pharmaceutical Science,
which took place in wonderful weather
between September 26 and 28 2005, at
Siófok, on the edge of Lake Balaton in
Hungary.
The 1st BBBB Conference on
Pharmaceutical Science reflects the birth
of a new drug research forum in East
Europe. With the earlier agreement of
the EUFEPS Committee, this forum was
initiated by the national Pharmaceutical
Societies of Estonia, Finland, Hungary,
Slovenia and Turkey. This collaboration
is additionally regarded as a continuation
and an extension of the trilateral cooperation
among the Estonian, Finnish
and Hungarian Societies that began in
1934, but was interrupted by the Second
World War and resumed only in 1990.
The aim of this scientific event is to
invite the members of these Societies
and also colleagues from other European
countries under the umbrella of EUFEPS
to gather biennially on the shore of a
lake or on the sea coast with a view to
building up closer collaboration between
pharmacists and other members of
the scientific community dealing with
drug research and development, and to
strengthening the European spirit in this
region of Europe. The initial letter of “big
waters” gave the four B: Balaton, Baltic,
Bosphorus, and Bled.
Prof. István Hermecz, chairman of
the conference, opened the meeting and
the audience was greeted by the President
of EUFEPS, Prof. Ole J. Bjerrum, and
by Prof. Sándor Görög (a member of the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a former
member of CIR).
The conference included 3 plenary,
10 keynote and 10 oral lectures, which
were accompanied by 67 posters. The
first plenary lecturer, Prof. Nicholas
Bodor (University of South Florida,
USA), discussed the retrometabolic drug
design concept, soft drugs and chemical
delivery systems, which are similar to the
EUFEPS-initiated “New Safe Medicines,
Faster” program (http://www.nsmf.org).
In a brilliant lecture, Prof. Michel Bauer
XLVIII
Prof. Zelko Romana (SOTE)
(Sanofi-Aventis, France) surveyed the
determination of the amorphous phases in a
drug substance and excipients by dielectric
spectroscopy. Prof. Kálmán Magyar
(Semmelweis University, Budapest,
Hungary) dealt with the discovery of the
first selective MAO B inhibitor, selegiline,
and its fundamental place in the treatment
of Parkinson disease.
The keynote lecturers discussed
different hot topics in drug research
and development. Prof. Martti Marvola
(University of Helsinki, Finland) spoke
about colon-specific formulations in
the prevention of super-infections and
colon carcinomas. Prof. Krisztina
Takács-Novák (Semmelweis University,
Budapest, Hungary) characterized the
physico-chemical profiling of poorly
soluble molecules. Prof. Seppo Lapinjoki
(University of Kuopio, Finland) presented
an overview on the quality and stability of
biopharmaceuticals. Prof. Yasemin Yazan
(Anadolu University, Eskisehir, Turkey)
introduced the audience to molecular
imprinted polymer systems for drug
delivery and controlled release. Prof.
Finnish delegation... Profs. István Erös Klebovics Imre Prof. Nyiredi Szabolcs president of
